Well done sir !!! Flew this morning was told to hold short for P51 short final. I never get sick of seeing em. I'm lucky where I'm at the 51's are a routine sighting. We have probably 6-7 at the field. Including Bardahl, Voodoo ,Strega, Dolly, spam can, sweet and lovely, and occasionally plum crazy and lady Alice. Also is an A model Boise Bee.

Great work. My paw paw flew 56 missions in a P-51D mustang based out of Italy in WWII.

Damn, I built that same model when I was a kid 50 years ago. Do the model companies have agreements on the longevity of their kits?

Not the best video quality (filmed it with an iPhone) but here's video of my buddy flying his P-51D over Mesa, AZ. I filmed it back seat of a T-6 Texan.

primarily for its unmatched long range, speed, and versatility, which enabled it to escort bombers deep into Germany, crippling the Luftwaffe and securing Allied air superiority, a feat unmatched by other fighters like the Spitfire or P-47 in that specific role.

The greatest tale told, the allies didn’t have an aircraft to escort the bombers to Germany.

Go and research the same time period (summer ‘43, December ’43 of range for aircraft on internal fuel of the p-47 and p-51. You’ll find range was comparable. For some reason the myth of we were so haphazardly dumb until the mustang showed up is completely baffling.

Case in point, go look at the ranges p-47s were flying under Gen Kelly in New Guinea around the same time.

I don’t know why the 8th Air Force had a hard time providing drop tanks for the p-47, but it had the range to reach Germany, including the Schweinfurt raid with the proper drop tanks afforded to mustangs.

What’s even more impressive is that a p-51 doesn’t have full aerobatic performance and is limited until roughly 70-75% internal fuel. The p-47 had no such restrictions at any weight of internal fuel.

A real case on why they switched over from p-47s to p-51s is that the p-51 is cheaper to produce. You could have 3 p-51s for 2 p-47.

Mainly because Hap Arnold forbid fighters from using drop tanks. It was criminal. We could have had P-38s escorting our bombers from Day 1. Arnold was part of the Bomber Mafia and wanted to prove they could go it alone.

I’m wondering if that plane was actually a Checkertail plane or just painted that way for the livery? Checkertail Clan was the 325th fighter group consisting of 317th, 318th, 319th fighter squadrons. My paw paw was in 319th fighter squadron.

I buy most. Some are Christmas & birthday gifts from family. My stash is on page one. That’s all of them.
