They are doing some Audubon level updating.
For those of you who don't know how bad Audubon Zoo use to be for the animals, just watch the movie "Cat People" with Natashia Kinski, Annette O'Toole, Malcolm McDonald and John Heard. It shows the zoo how it use to be, especially the area that housed the big cats back then.
As a kid I'd feel sorry for all those big cats in cramped cages that only allowed them about 4 or 5 steps in each direction before hitting a wall.

I laugh when people compare Jackson to BR. BREC has more money than the City of Jackson.
Jackson is Baton Rouge without the major university.

Audubon zoo is still pretty small. It’s a great zoo in many ways, but they really don’t have the space for some of the animals they keep.
That said, if the Jackson Zoo fails I hope Audubon can pick up the Pygmy hippos and the Gibbon from the transfer portal.

Some big national news outlet did a story on Audubon in the 70s that was titled something like "Animal Ghetto" that exposed a lot of bad stuff.
It led to the creation of the non-profit that maintains and fundraises the zoo.

Looks like admission is $8 per adult and $5 per child. So less than 10k visitors in say 7 months…or less than 50 visitors a day.
How much do they charge to get out of Jackson?

The Jackson zoo is a shadow of its former self. I remember going as a kid and having the best time. Even the early 2000's when Zoo Blues was still a thing. Taking the train ride around the zoo, seeing all the animals, petting some, it was a great place. Now I wouldn't go there just because of the location, much less the ran down poor looking exhibits. Lafleurs was a great spot to add it right next to the children's museum and the natural science museum. I know it would have been on less acreage, but it's still a great area right next to the interstate. That area behind target is rough and getting rougher by the day. We no longer go to Northpark Mall because it's a crime ridden area now.
Jackson won't let the zoo go because it's a source of revenue and a place they can hide money. It would make all the sense in the world to have a zoo in Flowood or Pearl.

There are a few sites on Lakeland Drive in Jxn that would make sense, but require the city to work with the state and other organizations, so it won't happen under current leadership. There's a barely used golf course owned by the state and little league fields taking up prime real estate. The course could be shut down and the little league fields could be moved to the North Jxn soccer complex. Either of these options would take vision and the city actually working with other organizations, which will not happen. Much easier to do nothing and blame racism.

Looks like the 'new Afrika' mayor chumlalaka...has accomplished his goal of transforming the city of jackson MS into...wait for it....a REAL Afrika...LOL
Moral of this sordid tale...if you vote for bat-shite candidates you get what you deserve...this OBVIOUS lesson is yet to be learned/recognized by a large portion of our 'educated' voting base...LOL

A zoo generally isn’t a profit center… but that revenue number is low.
Do they accept EBT and stamps?

I'm 110% sure that wherever those animals end up will be a massive improvement.

If they close zoo, it will take nearly a year to find homes for the animals.
Unfortunately, some animals will have to be put down as they won't be able to handle transport.

Why go to the zoo when you can drive around the streets for free? Most of the animals aren't in cages of any kind.
