JD I had to laugh after reading your post, but then I realized you had a point. I pretty much hate people as well so maybe it won't be too bad.

The one thing I have a problem with is, my ex is an ex for a reason. If I was a betting man, I'd bet she screws it up with the guy she's with an ends up back in Lake Chuck before any of my projects finalize. I'd be stuck again 11 hours away from the kiddos. And that's why this hasn't been an easy decision. Normally I would have already packed and left to be near my kids.

Got Blaze's GIF is one of 2 vivid memories I have of Midland/Odessa from my time there many, many years ago..

The other was a stripper, swinging from the pole at the local strip club, while 8 months pregnant.

No amount of therapy have been able to erase either memory from my mind.

The old saying out there was "raise your kids in Midland, raise hell in Odessa".

It isn't that bad out there. You will have a drive for entertainment but the cost of living is really low. Great dove hunting out there also.

Do your research when looking for a neighborhood to live and you will be fine.

Why do you hate the OP, Midland sucks unless you own thousands of acres of land with oil rights and have your own private helicopter to get the frick out of there when you want.

yeah. just because the medium income is higher than Odessa doesn't mean the Quality of life is better. it's still hot and brown and far from anything redeeming.

So you were offered a substantial pay increase and an opportunity to be closer to your kids? And you are just considering it? You must be a great father

Hell yes. There is nothing great about west texas. Unless you’re the type who “wants to be left alone”. Desolate and totally dependent on a volatile industry.

Rent!

Want to buy something? Buy land. Maybe you make money one day from it? Maybe your kids do?

The only people who really hate it out there are soy city boys. You’re not very far from big bend NP. MD has enough of everything. Restaurants, shopping and a minor league team. It’s worth trying before you say no based on other people’s opinions. That area is booming and is growing at a rapid rate.

City life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Hard to beat peace and tranquility.

It also busts! At least my clients out there use to all but vanish and start selling off toys when oil prices went down.

Sounds like this is your ex-wife

Just curious since I have no clue. May need to consult your attorney on this question. If you establish permanent residence in Texas for 7 years, how will that affect or change your child support pay ? Texas child support laws are BRUTAL ... one child= 20% of Net Monthly Income; two children = 25% of Net Monthly Income; three children = 30% of Net Monthly Income; four children = 35% of Net Monthly Income. I'm guessing CS financial calculations based on the State in which you filed divorce, rather than your current domicile ? Either way you have my prayers brother

Then as a divorced father who did not live in the same city as his two kids, I would strongly urge you to do this. The visits were good but could never be the same as being close by for everything.

Odessa will be fine and will be worth whatever is lacking because you get to be near your kids.

Housing is the biggest issue. Let's face it though, housing is spiking everywhere and inflation is doing the rest.

You will be fine and can relocate another day.

Are you single ?

If so jump on it and go make some money

It's hell on earth but the money is great

I spent two summers in Iraan Texas and could make enough bank to live the rest of the year, I was a college student with no bills though

When I was in my mid 40's about 8 years ago, the wife and I stayed at a guest ranch in Fort Davis. There was a BBQ at the place where I was talking to this grizzled oilfield welder from the Midland/Pecos area. The way he was talking about things made me ask him his age, he was 39 and I'd figured him every bit of 59. Keep a hat on out there.

I have built pipelines all over the US, Canada, just enough into Mexico to say that we were there, and the Middle East and of all the places that sucked the most, it is the Permian.

Seriously, Iraq does suck more but the pay more than makes up for almost getting killed on a daily basis.

Nothing to do in Pecos. If you can live in Midland or Odessa. You can always rent an apartment there theres some pretty nice ones around Midland/Odessa. That area is not that bad dont let the negative Nancys deter u from moving there. The oilfield is starting to come back in West Texas so expect it to be pretty busy.

I would ask my ex wife or kids if they can talk about living in Odessa.
