Don't go to PA school.

That is literally a dead end. At least do nursing and become an NP or CRNA.

With all seriousness, my best friend started PA school after I started medical school and has already graduated. He has a great job in the ER making 120K+ and he also has time to pick up extra shifts at an urgent care.

I just wanted to be working by now. I'm 28 and still in school

Scruffy will need to explain that against the mountain of financial and work/life balance data that is readily available.

4 days/week at $120,000/yr is a tough sell as a "dead end".

Even 5 days/wk at $85,000 for a new grad is pretty appealing.

I'm 29 and start fellowship at 30. Welcome to medicine.

Honestly though, you have more room for advancement by going the NP route.

Be a physician. Get the highest level of education/training available in your chosen field. If you're concerned about the future, look at the thoughts of many in this thread telling you to be a midlevel. Midlevels are killing their future with huge numbers of graduates from diploma mills. Every young RN out there is going that route.

If I was to go back and do it again, I would most likely go the hospitalist route.

There are jobs literally everywhere, the pay is good (most I know are in the upper 200's after bonuses), and the 7 on 7 off is a no brainer. It is boring as shite, but for the money/life style trade off it's absolutely worth it.

Really?

As an ER nurse for years I have seen these guys my whole career. Many seem miserable? I don't know if it is just the people I see? Are they money grubbers who just aren't taking the "7 off"?

I could see a good hospitalist group being a good thing? Maybe. But those days on, you are gonna work for that money.

GeauxT, I am not shitting on your reply. Just curious or surprised to hear that hospitalist would be a coveted position?

Againmaybe the guys I see do it are just cash whores who kill themselves until they burn out?

Go for it. We need primary care physicians; but, at least now, the $$$ is in doing procedures. If you want to help people it is a good and rewarding life. We need A GPA STUDENTS.

the poorest doc relative i have makes >220/year, they still make damn good money. it's only about whether you want to or not, nobody else gets a say.

That applies to anyone who works in the non-profit sector, not just physicians.

Gee. People dont realize that they need a smart physician. Do we really want average students to operate on and treat our kids? Drs deserve the high pay. If you dont like that concept let an average student cure your cancer...good luck with that!!!!

Not a soul has mentioned dentistry. It's consistently been ranked #1 Best Job by US News and World Report. You can do 4 years of school and get out making very good money. Still in healthcare, can be your own boss (huge plus) and work as much or little as you want, and build relationships with people over the course of a career. If you have decent hand skills and have that good of a GPA, then you have a solid chance at getting in school. I could recommend some folks to shadow if it's something you would like to consider.
