It’s not that bad; like another poster said, the mouth pried open sucks.

Just take Heroic Motrin afterwords.

I had one done a few years back by an endodontist and it wasn't bad at all...no worse than having a cavity filled really.

One I got years ago was painful for a brief second but otherwise not bad. That was done by a regular dentist.

One I just had a few months ago was easier than a filling. I never felt a thing. It was quick too. It only took 10-15 minutes, not counting the time for the numbing to set in. That was an Endodontist. They specialize in root canals and have more schooling on root canals than a regular dentist.

Go to an Endodontist. I recommend Dr. Hess on Government St. if you’re in the Baton Rouge area.

Looks worse than it is... It's just when that file thing hits the roots that sends shock wave through your body.

Its not that bad as long as you take antibiotics before they do the procedure, to get rid of the infection, don’t try it till the infection is gone

Not painful at all. The only pain you'll feel with modern dentistry is the initial shot of novacaine.

Go to an endodontis not a regular dentist. They specialize in root canals and are much more positive outcomes. Also are set up for a more painless procedure.

This. If you're still feeling anything they're doing it wrong.

I had my eyes closed the entire time because I thought it'd be better to not see all the tools he was using and actually fell asleep at one point. Dentist had to shake me back awake

Any time a dentist works on me my goal is to fall asleep. I’ve come close, but never have. I just want to be as relaxed as possible and make it as easy for the dentist as I can.

They probably have to wake people up all the time.

So how many of you baws have had a root canal?

I've had 5, 2 of those on the same tooth. I wish I had a time-traveling DeLorean to go back and slap my teenage self for not taking care of my teeth.

Biggest advice: if covered by insurance or financially feasible, go to an Endodontist instead of a regular dentist. Nothing against regular dentists, but Endos do root canals all day every day. They numb you, use some sort of cold solution to make sure you're numb, and are done in 30 minutes max. Like others mentioned, the worst part is the jaw cranked open and the smell when they get the abscess open.

Second biggest advice: A root canal removes the nerve and some interior blood vessels, resulting in reduced blood flow to the tooth. Without those, the tooth will get more brittle than your other teeth over time. I've had 2 fail - the tooth I had 2 root canals on, (got reinfected) and one other. Both broke below the gumline, meaning extraction. there's this weird thing where, when it hurts, you avoid chewing on it - and then after, when it doesn't hurt, it can become your go-to chewing tooth. Avoid almonds and such.

Both root canals gave me many more years with those teeth before I had to have them out, so it's worth it. The first I got about 8 years out of after the first root canal, and the second I got 7 years. Got a bridge for the first and am in the process of an implant for the second - just got my post put in Friday.

Find an endontist. They specialize in those as opposed to a general dentist. Had one by general dentist 15 years ago and recently learned he did an incomplete job requiring it to be redone due to infection. The endontist prescribed an antibiotic and a mild sedative prior to procedure and I really don't remember any discomfort or much about procedure at all.

Ive had quite a few. In today's world, they really aren't much to talk about. Bring your sunglasses, some relaxing music to turn up loud, close your eyes and sit back and relax. I always ask for one of their next support pillows as well. I have some thunderstorm and rain shower music I listen to for dental appointments. Drowns out the drilling noise that I hate.

They are not bad IF the infection is gone. I would assume your dentist wouldn't do one until the infection is over, however, I've seen them done before. It went really bad for the people I've seen with the infection still there.

Not nearly as bad as the pain you have to put up with waiting to get it done.

All you need to know is the dentist will be putting bleach in your mouth. Nothing to worry about at all.

I went in for a root canal last year and the docter gave me 7 triazolam when he was supposed to give me 2. In addition to gas. (1 hour)

I overdosed and he wheeled me out and dumped me in parking lot. Wife had to take me to ER.

I slept 6 hours that night with both eyes wide open and pupils reaching the white of my eyes.

He also snapped off a tool in my mandible, where it remains and is unable to be removed without removing molars.

So bad.

Root canals are bad.

Sounds worse than it is. I only had one and it wasn't bad at all.
