Hah. I specifically remember staying at a Hyatt in Houston with a rotating restaurant on the roof. At least I think it rotated?
I 100% remember that restaurant because my Uncle (who recruited my parents into Amway) had his wedding reception there
quote:
The worst was the years of sitting in the car with my parents and having to endure those tapes. I remember specifically in 7th grade or so…some douche on the tape was talking about “Dreams” over and over. Amway and its diamond speakers always pushed that word a lot…making your dreams come true. I had enough that day and told my mom that “dreams are for losers” and she did not take too kindly to that.
Every single tape was the same fricking thing. "I was just a normal guy working a normal J-O-B (which stands for JUST OVER BROKE) and giving the fruits of my labor to another man. Then I found Amway, quit my job, and struck it rich where I now own 32 cars 8 boats and 16 houses. If I can do it anyone can you just gotta believe and work hard"
My mom finally opened up about all of it about 15 years after my parents quit. Had some crazy stories. Such as how Dexter Yager would come out at around 2 in the morning after everyone in attendance was tired and wanted to go to bed after being at this function all day and he would just ramble on about nonsense as if he were some kind of cult leader.
My dad to this day still refuses to talk about it.

How would it feel to make an extra $100, $200, maybe even $300 dollars a month? Come to this meeting and I will show you how to do it.

I got suckered into to Cutco about 18 years ago. At least I came out with some pretty good knifes I still use today.

That sounds about right. I just remember being stuck at this hotel ALL weekend with not a whole lot to do. I think I sat in on one of the talks for about 10 minutes. It was so damn boring.
I don't hold the whole Amway thing against my parents. It surprises me that they fell for it. Both are pretty damn smart. My dad was a sales guy by nature and started his own business and was successful. I think he just saw this as another way to use his sales skills to make some extra cash. And it was harder to figure out the scheme at the time as well. But today, with all the information available on MLMs and pyramid schemes...it baffles me how some still fall for it.

Back in the 90s a coworker pulled me aside and told me he had something very important that he needed to discuss with me
Similar situation around 2012-ish with an ex-coworker. I asked him prematurely what is this about? He said AMWAY. I then asked him what are you still doing in this office with a follow up 'no thank you' answer. After that, he hardly spoke to me again.
On another situation, around that time period one of our consultants who I got to have a good professional relationship insisted about going to a presentation from Primerica (don't recall exactly the spelling). I told him I pass and weeks later when we spoke again I asked him how was it. He started mentioning wonderful things about it, that he joined and it is the best source of income that he has ever seen, even suggesting quitting his job and to partake in of the most lucrative businesses around.
Fast forward a decade later and he still is at his same old job. That should give you an idea.

I went to high school with this girl and we are still friends on Facebook. She quit her job as a nurse to be a Facebook fitness content creator but nearly 90% of her post are pushing some bullshite product or how’s she reinventing herself because of all the post pardum from her first baby.
It’s exhausting. Now she’s moved into something else that she said isn’t a pyramid scheme but it sure as shite looks like one.
The best part is her weight fluctuates constantly so it’s nothing but these before and after pictures. God bless her husband. She did have DD titties our freshman year of high school though. Those were nice.

I don't hold it against my parents either... it was a different era. People were more trusting of each other.
My dad was a sales guy too. Was the general sales manager for a huge radio station in Dallas-Fort Worth that carried Rush Limbaugh, the Rangers, and the Stars. He made good money, probably $250k a year. First 10 years of my life my family lived very well
But the Amway satanists convinced my dad that it was that job holding him back and if he quit his sales job and focused on Amway full time he would be far far wealthier. So he did that. I still remember all people in my parent's Amway organization all showed up to my dad's office on his last day of work and he came out and it was like a party with balloons and everything, video cameras that recorded the moment that Amway could use in their propaganda showing a dad quitting his job and hugging his wife/kids.
My dad bought a Cadillac so he could drive around showing the plan and have people think he was successful. Here is the deal, it didn't work. My parents go nowhere in Amway. I don't even think they reached Ruby level. My family was broke and bankrupt about 3 years after my dad quit his job because they sunk everything into Amway. And my family never recovered financially. Really had to scrape by. My mom worked 2 jobs.

Have a friend that got sucked into selling Plexus. Everything I read in this thread describes Plexus.
She has actually done really well for herself. So well that she quit a solid career position. Makes me nervous thinking about it. Quitting your career for a MLM company.

Holy shite, that is awful and creepy.

Oh shite. I forgot that everyone would call it "The Plan"....That's how they would refer to it on the tapes...pitching "the plan."

Damn dude, that is tragic. I'm sorry you and you and your parents had to go through all that. It's criminal. I think the thing that saved our family was that my dad actually loved his job and already was his own boss. So there was no desire to quit.

There’s a fairly new MLM platform for organic wine, Scout and Cellar. Friends of friends are very successful in it, got in early. It’s not just ladies selling to each other. One of the husbands is very involved.
None of that MLM stuff is for me, but some just love it, especially if you’re in early.

Just like mid level marketing.
Convinced people that they could have “their own business” and sell tons of it.
Once the product isn’t the new thing, sales go way down

Stuff like Amway and Primerica are so weird, like cults. Funny when someone you barely kind of know contacts you because they’re deep into their list of people to push the scam on.

Amway turned into bitcoin.

I knew a couple Darell & Brenda. They and some elite branched into a company called Alliance USA. Darrell was one of the best people I knew he said ground floor opp low investment.
I joined and the product was like Crack signed up two people and they ran with it. I received a check every Monday.
Darrell and I were signing people up several nights a week with no effort because of the Crack lol.
Darrell was married and lived vicariously through me. He was the ultimate wing man & we had a great time until his wife & one of her gf's called me for a 3 way. I didn't do it but I couldn't tell him either killed my friendship dude was an excellent friend & deserved better.
