Dinner is just what you call the main meal of the day. It can be either lunch or at night.

Supper is the night meal.

I always been a breakfast, lunch, dinner person.

My dad and grandpa called lunch dinner. My grandpa was in the navy during WW2. I’m pretty sure calling lunch dinner was a military or Navy thing back then and may still be.

Pretty much this growing up.

I still revert to my military days sometimes at random and call them morning, noon, an evening chow.

Very country here:

Meals at home:
Breakfast in the morning
Dinner mid day
Supper at night

Not at home:
Lunch mid day
Dinner at night

Grew up in Livingston Parish.

Breakfast/lunch/dinner

The only times lunchtime was called "dinner" was at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Brunch

Lupper - Meal between lunch and supper. Casual fare

Linner - Meal between lunch and dinner. More formal than lupper and always a sit down meal

For most country folk, the noon meal was the big meal of the day, hence dinner. The farmers would come in from working in the field or maybe the womenfolk would bring the food out to where they were working.

Well, since Dad was a wing nut in WWII, I suppose that’s why we referred to it as Breakfast, dinner and supper.

Great piece of trivia, there.

11-12ish Lunch
Supper evening - can also be called dinner
