LSU and the Mall of Louisiana
LSU has always been inside the city limits. BRPDs 2nd district to be more specific
The mall annexed after the last mayor invited them too, along with the hospital.

LSU has land that is south of campus and outside the city limits (inside the proposed new city) that was annexed a few years ago.

How so? Even if costs are higher than they are now, the net outflow of taxes across the border will be much more controlled. There is a reason why the city is way more concerned about the budget than the proposed city. BR leaders are already making moves to try to get St. George to carry a larger portion legacy costs, because they know that they have been carrying more than their fair share of the operations costs. The City of Baton Rouge leaders are probably going to have a reckoning in the near future.

Correct. It's basically a bunch of farm land and small research stations. I think the fire training center is part of it, too.

All the lonely, cat-loving, courageous, oh-so-brave Democratic womyn in the IEJT have their “ Better Together” signs and their nanny- fingers out ready to lecture you on just why you are a racistsexisthomophobe for favoring responsive, competent local government.

So...what would happen if st. George goes through, and decides that IT wants to annex some of the places that the BR gov hastily annexed?
I’d like to see that battle

LSU in or out of BR makes no difference.
The Mall is only partially in BR. The anchor stores and several out parcels are not in. They will remain unincorporated.
SG certainly could use the tax revenues from the area, but it’s not a deal breaker.

Their decision will be irrelevant. Although I wonder if the for profit college that buys their building in a few years will get to decide which way to go.

Bitch arse lib Advocate is trying to sew doubt and make people think it’s close.

If St George passes can we pass a law to stop “The Advocate” from littering people’s driveways with the Southeast Edition paper?
Does anyone really read it?

Inviting them is actually illegal. An area must request to be annexed, and cannot be invited. He let it slip that he asked them to while on camera one time and quickly realized his mistake and started to crawfish on the statement.

A city doesn't decide it wants to annex an area (unless you are Kip Holden). The people of an unincorporated area decide they want to be annexed into the city and they make the request. I am unsure of the exact numbers required or what the actual process is. It is a little more complicated if the area is already within a corporation's limits. I'm sure its possible to request your area be removed from the city of BR and annexed into the city of St George, but like I said, its likely more difficult.

Which will only make the turnout that much stronger.

My offer to them is this. Nothing. Not even legacy costs, which I would appreciate if they pay out of their pocket.
They didn’t want this to happen and did everything possible to block it, so frick em.

I did not read the whole posts.
But no one ever discusses that property taxes by law have to go up. The $75,000 homestead exemption does not apply to municipalities. It only applies to un incorporated portions of Parishes.
Art VII Section 20.(A)(9) dealing with the Homestead exemption States:
(9) This exemption shall not extend to municipal taxes. However, the exemptions shall apply (a) in Orleans Parish, to state, general city, school, levee, and levee district taxes and (b) to any municipal taxes levied for school purposes.
The proposed area of St. George is in the un incorporated area of the Parish. Once it is incorporated it becomes a municipality and the homestead exemption does not apply.
You start paying property taxes on the first dollar not the $75,001 dollar of your property taxes.

At least then the talk of seceding would finally be legitimate.

Need to work hard to get John Delgado’s endorsement - dude is hugely influential in BR

COA just opened a senior center on Antioch Rd. and is getting new busses, just in time for election. I wonder if the COA folks will accompany the seniors in the booth while they vote.
