I think so. Well, according to the documentary I watched. Of course her parents were very conservative church going people so the idea of telling them she was gay would have not gone well. It was not at all as accepted as it is today.
It seemed like the documentary insinuated her and her "best friend" were together (best friend was a female). IMO I think her dating Bobby Brown was because he was a "bad boy" and in her mind it was a message to her parents as if saying "is being in a toxic relationship with the opposite sex better than me being with someone of the same sex who I love?".
I also think it played a factor in her drug use. She wasn't truly happy and that was her way of dealing with it, but it is sad because there will never be someone who can sing like that woman could.

I didn’t really follow Whitney Houston but I knew all of her songs, but I did not know that all of the beautiful love songs she sang was about women.
That's because they weren't.
"Saving All My Love" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" are definitely about men, as it's right there in the lyrics.
"Greatest Love Of All" and "I Will Always Love You" were covers.
"Where Do Broken Hearts Go" could have been about another woman, as nothing on the lyrics indicates the gender of either the narrator or the love interest (it could be covered by a man). But she didn't write it.
Those were the five I remembered immediately.
I looked up a few others. "How Will I Know" is explicitly heterosexual. "All The Man That I Need" is obvious just from the title.
Her next two albums after that were movie soundtracks.

Just not the difference between “compliment” and “complement.”

She enjoyed cocaine and bathtubs too.

So you’re saying an artist worried about being shunned in the ‘80s would not have changed pronouns in a song lyric and that is definitive proof a song was about a particular sex? C’mon, man.
Elton John and George Michael were not singing about women in their ballads…except Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana.

Watched this last night and the take I got was she was happy to play around with either sex.
Equal opportunity pre-vert.

It's fairly easy to make the song gender neutral.
With "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", the only line you would need to change is "I need a man who'll take the chance". Can even make it first person, where the singer is the one taking a chance.

I think Whitney did whatever she had to do to get that crackrock.

There are a lot of women that enjoy sex with men AND women but prefer to be in a heterosexual relationship. I find women attractive but I have no desire to be in a relationship with one.
