Message boards are a different category from things like Facebook or Instagram imo.
Most choose to remain anonymous on here. The vast majority of people on the traditional platforms reveal their identity, connect with friends and coworkers etc.

Those are social networking sites but everything is still social media. Most of the negative things about social media are found on message boards too. Things like being addicted to it, echo chambers, spreading rumors, getting a skewed perception (vocal minority), etc. All exist on online message boards though to a smaller extent given the sites are much smaller.

I don't.
I use facebook to post pictures so my parents can see them. I ignore all comments on those posts, and I don't look at my wall or whatever it's called now... So I don't count that as "using" social media.

I have severely restricted my usage of social media in order to stave off depression and anger, but I haven't completely eliminated it yet. Each visit to social media reminds me that we are in the midst of an insidious uprising against meritocracy, an uprising that seeks to confiscate and reallocate wealth and opportunity on the basis of grievance and group identity, rather than talent and diligence, an uprising that seeks to silence the voice of rational dissent with shame. It also reminds me how few people read and gather knowledge and analyze problems and think independently. Most just appear to parrot positions they are given by the virtual mob. Of course, many of the ills of social media can be found in news outlets as well. Sometimes I think I need to cut myself off from all sources of media, but then I risk becoming ignorant and uninformed about the events of my time. It is all very depressing.

I permanently deleted Instagram and Facebook in January. I don’t see myself ever parting from TD or Twitter
