My wife and I currently aren't planning to have children. We have talked it over several times every now and then.

Personally, I don't see how this makes us selfish. I understand some people want kids. It should also be understood that some do not.

I'd rather the focus be more on people who should stop having kids (i.e. 3+ kids and counting and on welfare) because "they need meaning to their life/legacy".

That'd be great.. It's just habitual for humans at this point. We're busting at the seams with people, yet everyone wants to spit out more because it's the next thing to do or they don't bother with using birth control.

ETA: The wife and I are going to adopt if/when we decide on children.

Her not wanting kids has nothing to do with her being a horrible person. I even applaud her decision to ensure that she doesn't procreate. That's the only thing about her I applaud though.

And I can see that an expression of joy about parenthood would be a bummer if you are cynical or torn about it and how it has negatively effected your life.
that's not what is happening in this thread, but I'm beginning to think you're too dense or pontifical to understand where they're coming from.

Before anyone says anything....I have nothing against IVF, it's just not for me. It's very expensive and not a guarantee. I would certainly try other less invasive/expensive fertility treatments. But I would rather spend the money you would use for IVF towards adoption. Just a personal opinion of mine.

I see way too many babies and kids with genetic disorders at work. Guess it's just made me more aware of what can go wrong. If I do get pregnant I'm gonna be worried the entire time.

Because when your young son laughs at something you do to make him laugh, or looks up at you and smiles, or randomly tells you he loves you it is the best godamn feeling on earth. I was always take it or leave it with kids. I've traveled to far places around the world, and thought I wanted to keep doing that with my wife. I liked having that time to myself. I liked being really free to do things. I was completely, COMPLETELY wrong. The 3 years since my son and now daughter have been born have been far and away the best years of any since my own childhood(about to turn 35). I laugh inside a little at all those who claim to never want kids because they truly have no idea the pure joy they are will miss.

37, turn 38 in March....my window is closing fast As I have younger siblings with mental disabilities.....I am very aware of the risks of downs that drastically increases after the age of 40. Therefore I will only try until my 39th bday. If it doesn't happen by then, I will have to consider adoption at that point. I refuse to do more invasive fertility treatments (IVF).

My wife and I had these conversations about the risks of age with having a child also. My wife was less than a month shy of 39 when we had our daughter. She is perfect and so smart. Sometimes we wish we had not gotten her tubes tied and tried for another. In any case I really hope that you and your husband are able to conceive. I wouldn't necessarily put an arbitrary number on when I stopped trying either. Just my opinion.....not trying to tell you what to do.

I've never heard of you before, and it's hard to keep up with the demands of every mono-syllabic poster and anticipate their reading needs so as to not set them into a multi-page stalker's RAGE. I'll say it simply for you:

Parenthood good. Selflessness good. Children a gift. Parenthood not 4 everybody.

I had kids because I was in my 30s and I was getting bored. It was either that or drink myself to death.

It was a good decision. And gives me a chance for grandchildren so I'm not some sad old man who is dying alone.
