If you can enjoy life here just imagine if you put that effort into enjoying an actual nice place

perhaps instead of just chasing others to the next "cool" place to live, I'll stay and actively help create a new "cool" place

This. I learned that lesson while I was in undergrad at LSU. The people constantly bitching about how terrible and boring Baton Rouge was spent all their free time playing Call of Duty in their dorm rooms or apartments, eating at the same shitty chain restaurants, or getting drunk at the same shitty bar they went to the week before.

There's an old saying "If you ain't havin' fun in Shreveport, you ain't tryin' hard enough. If you ain't havin' fun in Baton Rouge, you ain't tryin'. And if you ain't havin' fun in New Orleans, you're dead!"

Louisiana is home. I know it's not perfect. It's not incredible. It's hot, the politics are crumby, the infrastructure blows and there aren't very many things to get excited about in the state, honestly. I don't like to bad mouth my home, but I would like to live somewhere else when my little one goes and spreads her wings.

Maybe if you liked being outside more than playing WoW, you'd have a different opinion

The state is amazing, the only problem is corruption, white trash and the blacks. Mainly the blacks

And the weather. The roads. The poor education. For you to think Louisiana's problem is mainly anything (sans corruption) shows how ignorant you are. There are blacks in every state and every state isn't as bad as Louisiana. I love New Orleans to death but I'm glad I don't live there anymore and have to start my family there.

Louisiana residents and those who grew up there have a self-loathing about them that you don't see in other states. None of the natives up here in Asheville trash their state or the environment where they grew up. They seem proud of it.

Unfortunately, it's this mentality that contributes to some of the bad aspects of life in Louisiana.

Some truth to this.

Baptist are usually a little weird to me. Really dry and not much fun. Then the non-domination group and their mega churches regurly seem like butt jobs.

Guess I can take the alcoholic Catholics a little bit more.

One of the reasons BR sucked for so long was because the Baptists were in power for decades and tried to squash drinking and Rock n Roll in the 80s and early 90s.

My time in Louisiana showed me that Louisiana was really good at some things and really bad at other things. There is no in between. I found it to be a mix of love it/hate it type of place. I never was on the fence about anything.

It was fine for a few years. I'm glad to have been there for college, but I am glad to have moved on. It's good to visit for a weekend in New Orleans or a LSU game, but other than that, I have no desire to go back.

Maybe to an extent. But just because I love Louisiana despite its problems doesn't mean I don't want a better future for the state. Being loyal to my home and wanting a better future for it aren't mutually exclusive.
