I think the greatest thing you could do is quickly forgive her, give her grace and double down on your love for your wife! She maybe carrying guilt and shame and how you handle this will either harm your relationship or significantly enhance it. Why rehash it and go back 20 years. She was immature, you were gone and she was still in college. Let it go sir! I think it takes considerable courage, love, kindness, mercy and forgiveness to move on. While we all probably would want to know all the same questions you asked, I would personally be afraid to hear the answers.

And that right there is what’s wrong with the USA.

I had a friend who found out his fiancee was having an affair on their wedding day. He went through with it and they're still married. It helped that her family is well-off and he's landman money whore.

20 years ago? It wouldn’t be a deal breaker, but I’d need some space. Anyone on here saying they’d divorce their spouse for something that happened 20 years ago is a liar.

First of all, thank God I’m not held accountable for my actions 20 years ago, as a college sophomore/junior. Second of all, hearing this story second hand, my first reaction to the “I’ll pray for you” is it was meant to be a condescending back handed comment. Who speaks to their spouse that way? “I’ll pray for you” is very much a detached from the situation comment. 20 years ago, before they were married, grow up and get a grip on your pride.

My wife and I both knew before we got married and we know it now: if you cheat with another person the union is over.

No exceptions

Obviously I don’t mean saying that in general is a detached and a-hole move. But if my husband comes to me and confesses some shite from when we were in college and my response is “I’ll pray for you”, that’s a detached bullshite response.

I think he needs a little hookers and blow to get over it.

No I think that he needs to have secks with the wife's best friend or sister. Hookers and blow are a remedy for the one time drunken fling type of cheating. The keeping the secret makes it more personal and thus needs a more intense response. Also think that the couple should just become swingers because she is already getting dicks on the side.

Assuming that was the only time, She should have just swallowed that guilt and lived with it instead of telling him that 20 year old factoid and putting this on him.

It was selfish of her to bring it up 20 years later. She doesn’t get to destroy her husband’s sense of trust just because she has guilt. Your friend needs to call a divorce lawyer and get the jump on his wife.

you both were young,

Am I the only one that thinks this saying, attached to a time frame (in this case 20 years), is one of the biggest bullshite cop out excuses?

If the wife was holding on to that one the hardest as an excuse, I couldn’t fault the guy for going out and getting some strange and then telling the wife, “just think, in five years we’ll look back on this and realize I was younger then. It will be in the past, let’s just let it go now.”

I guess I’m a liar then because that would be a wrap for me. The fact that she kept it a secret for 20 years only makes it worse IMO, honestly I’d probably be in jail shortly after she admitted to it.
