I'm sorry your life sucks and that in your eyes crossing an imaginary line makes it better.

Louisiana is a shithole. Unless your entire life is fishing or hunting and drinking shitty beer in a run down camp while making $75k per year at the plant, there is nothing to back your claim that moving to a different state doesn't provide a much higher quality of life.

If you want to stay and be ruled by the LaToya and John Bels of the world, nobody is stopping you.

It has nothing to do with hurricanes but my wife is ready to leave as well. She was always the holdout when we discussed it in the past. She's not even from LA anyway although she's lived here for 25 years at this point.

Our only decision now is whether we do it soon or when the youngest one finishes HS in 3.5 years.

I don’t blame her,I’m sorry I retired in this shithole.
We lived in Bull Shoals Arkansas a couple of years and came back because of the poor pay there. That was the only real downside of living there,I would have never been able to retire if I had stayed there.I made the mistake of buying land and building a house in the country.I’m so bogged down with this property plus the grandchildren live nearby so I’m trapped.
I kick myself frequently for not planning my life better so I could move back.
My sister and her husband retired near Boise Idaho, very nice there except price of houses is outrageous.

It's part of it. It sucks. But where do you go? To the West with wildfires? To the East with hurricanes and flooding?
To the mid country where there are tornadoes?
Or to the north where you will fight winter snow every year guaranteed? I'm curious to hear an answer to these questions for myself really.

I would go to the Utah, Arizona, Wyoming area. Every place has its natural disaster risks, but I would like to have a decent place to live when I am not dealing with a natural disaster.

With Louisiana you have nothing that balances out the risk you take with hurricanes.

This is my fear and why I want to leave before kids' schooling even becomes a question.

After being in LA for a weekend, Louisiana isn't so bad.

I've always been ready to leave, but the wife wants to be close to family. Then we had kids and it cemented the issue. Maybe after they make it out of the house, another 15 years, we can make a move.

As much as I love Louisiana, there isn't much upside to staying here. Where would we go? I don't know, but pretty much anywhere in the US would be an improvement, LA is either last or close to it on every metric comparing the states.

My youngest graduates high school the year before I can retire with full benefits. We will be gone within the year after retirement, just not sure where yet. The only reason we stayed after college is because my wife is an only child and her mother is here. Grew up south of Lafayette, stayed in the BR area after LSU. I can't wait to leave. The family I do still have in Cajun country acts like you need a passport to cross the basin so it's no different being a 3 hour flight away or a 2 hour drive; still only seeing them twice a year.

Visited Florida last weekend and it really opened my eyes.

Moved back to BR at one point. Driving around the first week we were surprised how shitty everything is compared to where we were before.

Took a while to re-normalize to the general condition of BR.

Spouse and I are ready, but not due to the storms. More due to quality of life and hot as balls weather June-September. Kids graduate high school in 2 years and one is going to LSU for sure. Planning on a townhome here close to LSU and a place in CO/UT. 5-10 acres with a small cabin/house 1-2 hours from a big city. Split time until they are done with college. Then who knows.

I didn't realize how much of a shithole LA was until I moved to Dallas. Dallas has its issues but holy shite it's 1000x nicer.

More things to do. Better quality of life in general. Better looking women too.

Gov. Abbot makes Jon Bel look like he's got downs.
