Ft Polk/Johnson just announced no fires on base but they are monitoring the storm and local fires
quote:
There is no active fire threatening Fort Johnson. JRTC and Fort Johnson leadership are monitoring all the locations in our local area with active wildfires and are in contact with local authorities.
Please follow the JRTC and Fort Johnson Facebook page for any official updates or information. The safety of our Soldiers, Families and the entire Fort Johnson community is our number one concern.

Biden should declare a federal emergency so we can use troops from Polk to help fight the fires. It’s been done in California many times.
To this point lack of resources hasn't been the issue. The response has actually been greater than expected.

Are you involved with the response? Can you give us some more insight?

If radarscope is accurate, the merryville fire just blew up huge.

I’m wondering if smoke mixing in with light showers can have that effect on the radar.

Just watching and paying attention. I think after the Florien fire and losing 18 structures they weren't going to get caught watching this one.

That's definitely the fire burning around the Neale area. Ramped up, for sure.

Just saw pictures of the roof at South Beau high gym peeling off from the tornado. Minor damage but scary for those inside it.
Also saw pictures of Merryville High with the fire in the distance behind it. It’s right on the edge of town. I’ve driven through there many times and the HS has woods right by it. The fire and smoke are in the distance but very close to the high school and town.

It is and since we have a lot of experience with massive wildfires out here I'm going to post this again for any of you out there. I'm not sure if you guys are taught this stuff or not but there's no harm in posting. This is about creating a defensible space around your property from CalFire. Stay safe, good luck & God Bless.
Save your property

Helpful post for sure... I've lived in this part of the state for 40 years and wildfires have never even crossed my mind. It's a historic drought and heat wave and thousands of acres of timberland is as dry as it's ever been.
We're prepared for hurricanes down here, not this at all.

One of the fires in Ragley I saw was started by someone who tossed out a cigarette.
So stupid. Litter is nasty to begin with but you guys have dried out and people are still that careless. It blows my mind. One stupid decision like that and towns can be destroyed, lives lost and your outdoors aren't the same for a generation. Over a freaking cigarette butt.

Same pictures I saw. That’s not far. Might be in the same woods adjacent to the school. I’m not sure there’s a break in the trees once it’s in that forest.

Thanks Figgy. I’m a hundred miles or so away and In no danger.
I’m sure someone here can use this and we can all bookmark for future.

I hope so. I really do. I don't want to see places incinerated. I've never been to Louisiana but I like you guys and if that link can help someone at some point then I helped out in some way.

The winds can be a real problem for the crews with those conditions. Out here the embers will carry around a mile in the wind and boom you've got flare ups all over the place. It's really crazy. There was a post a few pages back, yesterday I believe, that said this was around 15,000 acres. The big fire we had a few years ago that almost had us under evacuation orders ended up at 379,895 acres. This is, was, beautiful Sierra Nevada wilderness. Now it will take 3 - 4 decades before those areas look like how I remember them. It's sad to think about. Anyway, protect your property and your family. That's what really matters here.
