re: Will Baton Rouge ever be the Woodlands?

One thing would be to put a loop in around the city. Traffic would be priority 1 for me.

Exxon has moved their whole HQ in Texas out to the woodlands. Buildings are going up like crazy out there which in turn increases property value. The new oil boom is driving all of that production. Baton Rouge is not a town driven by oil/production...it's driven by LSU, without that it wouldn't even be on the map.
That's why I compare Mandeville to Woodlands, Chevron runs their GOM operations out of mandeville and I heard may be adding another building.

What stops the next city from turning into BR in a few years?
I hope things change for the better around here, but if you look at the last 30 or so years of the city history, we have issues. The same problems we had in the early 70's are still issues (albeit more prominent) today. The school system seems to be the main problem. Mainly, if we ensured that parents cared about their kids, schools would have a better chance at becoming better. From there, other societal issues fall into place.

This has to be a troll question right? Have you actually ever been to the woodlands?
The racial and socioeconomic make up of the two cities is drastically different, Baton Rouge will never been anything more than it is now because of this

This is why as NO-BR "regionalizes" BR will be a node of the region and less as a second center like Ft. Worth and St. Paul. The new airport at MSY in 2018 will only boost NOLA. BR should look at ways to capitalize on the transcontinental traffic that uses I-12 and bypasses New Orleans... Regional distribution centers, logistics services, etc.

Not really sure how Mandeville is comparable to the Woodlands in any other way.

really?
they are both white flight suburbs of larger cities
Woodland might be nicer, but they are most certainly comparable

No. Not enough continuous, solid land from NOLA to build strip malls the entire way up I10.

I'm sure The Woodlands is nice, but why is it the standard that Baton Rouge should aspire to?
This is part of the problem and a big reason I moved away from BR years ago.
BR thinks that it's great and people want to aspire to be like them.
Yet, at the same time people are moving away after they get out of college to move on to bigger and better things. All the while poverty is swooping in on the whole city and nothing is done about it. They feel better about themselves by putting down other cities (go read some BR vs Houston threads) but never actually do anything to improve anything (The loop debate was old when I left in 2002 and still it continues). They brag about "culture" while being the mecca of chain restaurants.
Baton Rouge should aspire to SOMETHING. If not being able to pick themselves up by their own bootstraps then use some other success as an example. But for God's sake, do something.

Are ALL of the schools as good?
What's the median income in Mandeville?
What's the average house worth?
Does it have the same level of retail?
Is it within spitting distance of a city with 5 million people?
Is it right down the road from one of the top ten biggest airports in the country?

I know Austin gets a lot of hate here, but BR should strive to be a different Austin. That is a more comparable city for BR to compare itself too.

do you not understand the definition of "comparable"?

BR is working its way towards Austin in the terrible traffic department.

I'm a pharmacist and my wife is in oil and gas. I am thinking of getting licensed in TX and maybe moving. I always hear of the high property taxes but never see a number. How much are annual property taxes in the Woodlands? I'll hang up and listen
