Californication.

Austin has always been weird and loose. But with all the carpetbaggers, it became liberal and shitty. Not just liberal.

Their DA Jose Garza has allowed the city to function as a GTA 5 server

It's always been shitty imo. Construction, hipsters, homeless people... I hate it more and more every time I have to go there.

Tech bros moved into these soulless high rises downtown, then got pissed at local music being played after 9PM. I guess they didn’t do their homework.

Unfortunately, money talks, so these folks got their way and the music stops early.

It's really this. Everywhere.

Locally owned hip dive bars and unique shops start to fill previously run down areas.

More people than hipsters think it's cool.

Upscale small plate cocktail bars and wine shops replace the record shops and dive bars.

Developers build fancy arse condos and all the punks and hipsters move.

The people that buy the fancy condos are boring and rent is too high for locally owned shops so the neighborhood becomes a bunch of upscale corporate chain stores.

I've only been in the Austin area for four years. The city itself is still strange. Out east they are going hard with printed concrete houses, apartments and tiny home communities. There are plenty of weirdos but not the cool type

The area immediately east of 35 is your hipster enclave. The rest of Austin proper is probably more liberal than any place in Texas. As soon as you go into any of the surrounding areas it gets normal fast.

By my estimation too much money came into the heart of the city and prices went up for the prime real estate, it's gentrification of the hippies rather than a poor minority. Instead of anything cool and unique you get soulless wine bars and coffee shops. There is nothing unique other than the fact that the geography allows for some IYKYK types of enclaves which cater to those willing to pay high prices

I moved to ATX 4 years ago. I am definitely not a lefty and I love it here. Yeah there are major lefties here but so far everyone has been cool. It is expensive but there is a lot to do and food is great. Something for most everyone here.

I've been visiting friends/family in Austin for my entire life. The city has evolved, for sure, but it's always fun for a long weekend, and you will never run out of things to do.

I've been in the Austin area for 20 years. What made it a cool place was it being a hippie town. Despite being a decent sized city and having a solid tech industry, it still felt like a small town. Things moved a little slower, people were laid back. You could be sitting at a bar chatting to the person sitting next to you. They could be a multi millionaire and you'd never know it.
Tons of dive bars and locally owned shops.
It was already shifting when I moved here but very slowly. Once they lifted the ban on the skyline downtown and all the apartment buildings came in, it exploded and Austin lost it's identity. Covid was the final nail in the coffin.
Now instead of hippies that just want to be left alone to smoke their pot and enjoy music, they were replaced with the bat shite crazy progressives who care about nothing but themselves.
You don't even see or hear "keep Austin weird" anymore. The people here aren't familiar with it and have no idea about it. All the moms and pops shops have closed up to be replaced with the same corporate chain bullshite that you can get in 15 minutes in either direction.

I keep telling people that Austin is the perfect example of what happens with diversity. Austin has been diversified by people from all over. Massive influx of people from California and NY along with people from India. None of them care about what made Austin Austin. The identity is gone and it's just like every other major metropolis now.

Austin is awesome. Live on the west side of town, near some normal people, enjoy the hills, avoid I-35, go for a run around town lake and jump in Barton Springs pool, eat some brisket, grab a marg on the patio at Matt’s, see a show at ACL live, if you forget to lock your door- who cares, hike the green belt, go to dripping for some wineries. there’s a trade off for any city
