There is an abandoned mine under the Federal Reserve bank down 280 that had to be cemented up so someone wouldn't try to dig up into the floor of the bank and rob it. Seriously.
The house I mentioned above was less than a mile from the federal reserve building.
We canoe the Cahaba a lot. There’s all kinds of old mines and stuff along the river from Trussville down to 280. Several places where the river cuts a bank and you can see the coal seams.

I did a post on Reddit years ago basically do you know about your cities underground. Dallas, Houston, Birmingham, New Orleans etc, almost every city

There used to be one close to the top of Red Mountain near The Club. Walked in as it had pretty high ceilings so no crawling was involved. Its entrance was covered several years ago. At Red Mountain Park West of Homewood, there are several open mine entrance and vents. They're covered with fencing to prevent entry. I do quite a bit of trail running there and the cooler air they emit is really nice in the summer.

I used to service those nearby radio towers -- meaning lots of late-night work up there. Lots of loud & creepy noises would come from mine sites.
Both loved it and would get the hell off the mountain with the quickness when my work was done.

I knew it used to be a center of iron production. What I didn't know is it's riddled with abandoned mineshafts. These folks like to explore them.
Birmingham is one of few places in the world harboring all three ingredients needed to make iron and steel: coal, limestone, and iron ore. All the mines for iron ore were located in Red Mountain which runs through the whole city and where the statue of Vulcan sits atop.

Took about three videos before I realized I know this dude. Haven't seen him in about a 15 years. Back then he was obsessed with chasing ghosts.
It’s weird you say this. About 10 or 12 years ago I was going out with a girl who mentioned she had a friend that was big into ghost hunting. A short time later she and I along with 4 or 5 of her friend met up in this very old secluded graveyard somewhere out in the Birmingham Trussville area. This guy friend of hers is moving around the cemetery putting equipment on headstones and checking for readings. All in all an interesting experience until a car full of satan worshipers showed up and it was time to bounce. From there this guy led us a few miles down the road and into the woods again. There about half mile or so back in the woods he led us to a mineshaft..
I wonder if this is the same guy because you mentioned his hobbies and the timeline matches up with my experience

Josh is a pretty cool guy too. Met him at the Y maybe 2 years or so ago when his channel really took off. He’s offered to take me underground but I just can’t do it. Claustrophobia isn’t something I think of often but his videos make me so uncomfortable.
This is where the Magic City nickname came from, or at least that’s what I’ve always been told.

You just about can't drive thru walker, Jefferson, or north Tuscaloosa counties without driving over a mine.
