And Sweden pays more money, no?
Probably.

Choose to represent another nation on a national stage for monetary reasons? Especially when you were born and raised in the US? Go live in Sweden and China. Don't come back.

Both of them choosing the athletic program that supplies them with the most money, facilities, resources is the most American thing to do.
So would you argue betraying your country by spying on it for Russia or China, because they pay more money, is American?

I don’t think this is just purple and gold glasses, but while I wish Mondo would vault for the US, it’s much more forgivable to compete for a small friendly NATO country than for our greatest adversary and human rights abuser.

Are you arguing doing sports is in any way comparable with spying? That's a really weird take for an espionage board

Should both lose their US citizenships.
In the modern era of competitive individual olympic sports, an individual athlete needs to literally hire a staff of coaches, nutritionist, personal trainer, manager at. All this costs enormous amount of money and this is where sponsorship comes in.
In the US, there is no state sponsorship, and you are fighting in a crowded field to get sponsorship as there are a lot of good athletes competing for money. Also here football and basketball players are the real rockstars.
For Mondo, he gets state sponsorship in Sweden because Sweden has very few, if any athletes of his calibre. He gets state sponsorship, plus he is a national hero. In Louisiana, or even in LSU, he would be respected, as he is but that is all. Sponsorship would be harder...no sponsorship, no money...no gold medal.
For Eileen Gu, China lags behind in winter olympics, so she is a big get for them. For Eileen it is easy sponsorship. It's a symbiotic relationship.
Its the $$$$$$ stupid....plain and simple....
By the way the tiger fan in me would always consider Mondo in par with Burrow, Shaq, Pete M, Billy Cannon, Simone Agustus, Sylvia Fowles, Angel Reeves and all the other champions that we have produced.

So, all the other US athletes that compete for the US are idiots? By your logic, we would not be competitive in any Olympic sport.
Mondo's excuse is just that, an excuse. He would be a household name here in the US and be very wealthy.

A lot of resources go into training. She's welcome to use American coaches, but she can do it from shithole China and those coaches can live there with her. They don't get to enjoy the relative freedoms and luxury of America. They wanna represent China, they can enjoy the communist control living there as well.
Spot fricking on

I don't blame her for chasing the bag. The additional revenue streams from sponsors and modeling that has resulted from it is life changing.
What I don't like is NBC covering and treating her like our US athletes just because she's a citizen. These profiles and spotlights should be reserved for athletes competing for us.

I am. If you’re willing to turn on your country in sport for cash, then who’s to say you wouldn’t do the same for information?

She missed another gold today btw
China paying millions for silvers

Lot of US athletes are not dual citizens, so they do not get the opportunity to go shopping.
US athletics is a crowded field and therefore extremely competitive for both slots on the US team and more for money.
If Mondo had stayed with the US, you think he would be as famous as Tom Brady or LaBron James? I do not think so.
This, everyone hates America, rhetoric of village bubbas is so stupid.
Wake up and smell the coffee....professional sports is about money.....
Also wake up and smell the coffee....the US is no longer a land of opportunity, there is a reverse flow of talent happening in every field.....Off course a village idiot can not see it.......

You don't need to be a dual citizen to go shopping. If you are a talented athlete, many countries will expedite your citizenship. Stop defending Americans who betray their homeland

Or maybe.. I am expecting too much....village bubba gump.

To be intellectually honest, let's not pretend it's a one way street here. Kaillie Humphries competed in multiple Olympics for Canada, got married to an American, and just won a medal for us.
The difference is that Gu is a high profile athlete who prefers Commies to her own nation and bad mouths her birth country every chance she gets. Mondo is similar to Humphries. (Frankly I wouldn't know anything about his background if it wasn't for this board.) Would we care if he was a guy who struggled to make finals? There are dozens of American citizens who can't sniff a USATF podium but go ahead and compete for other countries that don't have anyone who can sniff the Olympic standard.
Keep your eyes on the World Baseball Classic next month. There are several countries who have Americans playing for them who are usually bench players for MLB teams (Italy had been a big one).
