Dropped to 8th. Only16 points from 1st. Hit 2 of those and he wins.

Shaidorov had the unlucky timing of being the same exact age as Illia. He was destined to collect nothing but silver and bronze medals at world events.

Never give up. He wins gold in his first Olympics.

The silver lining is at least Ilia didn't lose to mediocrity. That Kazak dude was smooth as butter and absolutely killed it. It's funny the commentators kept talking about how he essentially wasn't acting gay enough to win.

The pressure of the Olympics is so high and people who have never competed anywhere near that level can’t understand any of the pressure

I was a college athlete who was a top 20 guy in my age class in the USA. Nothing like being at world championships and that is nothing like the Olympics. The pressure ramp is insane

Well at least Shiffren won't have to worry about being the biggest choker on the US Olympic team.

Had a huge lead and skated the worst he possibly could. He will finish 8th overall. Jesus. What a choke job.

Blaming it on the US not sending him to Beijing is going to cost him a ton of money. He could've survived his choke but sponsors are going to be fleeing now. Ashley Wagner on Gold Zone trying to cover up for him is not doing him any favors either.

Meanwhile...

That comment will have absolutely no impact on him. He just completely owned the performance in his interview. I don't know if he'll mentally recover from this, but he carried all the blame.

When he skipped the quad axel seems like he should have at least done something harder than what he did. Might have made the podium.

No kidding. My wife was a 2x All American, multiple trials, and never PR'd at any of those events she competed in. I don't recall seeing the very top 2 athletes completely crashing out like this though. Teams had sports psychiatrists on staff to work through mental blocks more than 3 decades ago.

Dan Jansen crashed out after his sister died yet never used it as an excuse. This crybaby sits and blames not going to Beijing for it. That statement alone shows that someone screwed up by not addressing mental issues. The self-created "Quad God" name should have raised a flag. Somebody really screwed up over the past 4 years when his first thought after coming off the ice was to go right to Beijing as an excuse. What has happened in the past 30 minutes is so far beyond just "not being on".

He can rebound somewhat at the World Championships next month, but this will be something he carries with him until the next Winter Olympics, if he’s still skating by then.

After they got him coached up what to and what not to say. Believe his words when he didn't think the mic would pick it up and his body language as he left the bench.

Looking at hype vs result, it looks like Lolo and 2020 Biles finally have some company.

I agree completely. I've been around lots of high level gymnasts and divers. The pressure when it's a single performance type thing is crazy. That's the reason you work the same program or routine over and over. You do it exactly the same every time. Changing things around is just not good. You want it to be so you don't think, you just do!

I wonder how many pastors are prepping a sermon to use this weekend about how this dude self proclaimed himself the capital G God of something only to get struck down from grace by the Almighty.

The flip at the end seemed out of place under the circumstances.

The ice dancers who got cheated may be our only figure skating medal. The judges love the Japanese girls. I don’t see either. Alyssa Liu or Amber Glenn winning gold

We did win the team combined gold.

Also, I know I called Ilia a choker earlier, but I’m seeing a lot of things talking about the quality of the ice. Any truth to that or just sour grapes?

I thought he handled himself pretty well given the circumstances.

Sponsors aren’t going to drop him over that. They might over just losing, but I doubt anyone is going to care beyond this week that a hot mic caught him saying he should have been on the 2022 team.

I don’t know, but basically everyone was falling. I think 4 of the last 5 fell which would be 4 of the favorites to win gold because the highest scorers from the short program went last today.

Agreed. He had one sentence immediately after he walked off the ice. Two minutes later he displayed fabulous sportsmanship in conversation with the winner. Just a minute after that (not being coached up) he spoke with Andrea Joyce and said, “I blew it!” He definitely owned. He said it was mental and he was overconfident. On him for sure. But coaching allowed that as well.

I guess we all jinxed him. The commentators said he pretty much had the gold medal gift wrapped after the other top skaters all fell, he just couldn't capitalize. It was there for the taking. Basically all he had to do was skate a clean program and he'd have won. The crazy thing is that the US won gold in three of the four categories at last year's world championships, and now we may only medal in one, depending on how the US ladies do tomorrow. We should get at least one medal out of that, but who knows.
