For my fellow east Texas Tigers, when are you thinking the white bass runs will begin this year? Last year I went around this time had a great day. This year the rain has all the creeks and bayous full full. I'm not sure when the timing will be right.
I'm kinda thinking about late next week going out to my spot and seeing how I do....

The river I fish in SW Miss usually gets going about mid March. Although I have caught them in late February. I am planning on trying them the weekend of Feb 24th, but I don't have much hope of picking up more than a handful.
The next weekend March 2nd seems like a better bet.
We are heavily dependent on the MS River stage. It basically needs to be between 28 and 38 at Vicksburg. And it needs at least a week between hard rains for the water to settle down.
Some years those conditions only happens maybe a handful of days at a time, two or three times each spring. You have to be ready to go when the conditions are right.

Don’t want to repost it, but do I recall that you catch some fish along a road that the public can access, near your property? I was thinking of taking my son when we’re in the neighborhood turkey hunting this spring.
ETA: never mind. I found the old post I was thinking of.

This warm weather has it kicked early. Central TX our lakes, creeks, rivers are up in the mid 60's.
People catching limits of white already and crappie on the banks. This last big rain muddied it up. But looks like by mid week they will both be full tilt.

There is public access where Oil Mill Road crosses Bayou Pierre one mile NW of Port Gibson MS.
There will be a dozen cars parked along the road if the fish are biting.
We're the big white house on the hill overlooking the field above the bridge. Stop in and say hello if the gate is open

The sandies are already being caught on Texoma. Right now you can catch both stripers and sandies on 3.5"swim baits on a 1/2-3/4 oz jig head.

Thanks.
The past couple of years I have fished a creek near Huntsville that's pretty popular for White Bass. I put my kayak in under a bridge and paddle downstream to an area that's shallow where they will stack up. Last year was insane. I probably caught 30 fish in half a day. Some were back to back casts. So much fun.
All were caught on a white beetle spin. I brought home 9 nice size fish, fileted them and fried them up for the family. It was a good day.

Have you had any luck on bayou Pierre this year? I think I’m going to try to make a trip down there with my kayak in a couple weeks. Will that be too late?

Let me get my dates right. ... OK just checked my phone.
So I ran into some fly fishermen who caught about 15 or 20 on Saturday March 2nd. So I went back on Sun March 3rd and fished hard. All day.
It literally took me until about 4 pm to figure them out. It was a unique presentation fishing upstream into an eddy pulling the bait back to within 2 feet of the bank before I could get a hit.
Picked up about 30 in 90 minutes before dark. It was a long tough day of fishing to make it happen.
Still definitely too early for them to be wide open.
Then we got a 4 inch rain that muddied things up. Followed by 1 inch Friday followed by 2 inches today. So it will be muddy for at least another week.
Might give them a try next weekend the 23rd. Definitely not too late. It's just dependent on clear water. I'll be there each of the next three weekends so eventually the conditions will get right

Thanks for the info! I’m glad to know you’ve caught a few. I’ve heard about the white bass run there for a couple years now and always wanted to get in on the action.
I gave it a shot last Wednesday but didn’t have any luck. I came in from the Mississippi River in a my Jon boat and made it up to James creek. Kind of sounds like I either didn’t make it up river far enough or the water was too muddy.
