I bought a used Standard Ruger and it functions great and is accurate for plinking purposes.

I've got a Ruger Mach I I bought as a teenager. I love it. Used it trapping, raccoon hunting, and plinking.

Edit to above post. I bought a Ruger 10/22. My Dad gave me the Mach 1.

Got the wife a Ruger SR22, fun gun to shot and won't break the bank. Got a buddy that bought a Rock Island 22 magnum and loves it. S&W has one too.

Bird/rat shot is designed for revolvers and single shot firearms, not semi-autos. Most semi-autos in any caliber will not cycle them.

Rat shot is usually powered much less than regular ammo.

I like the old real steel ones, I have a Ruger Mk II and a High Standard Sport King, and a S&W 22A with a rail.

A buddy of mine has a little Kel-Tec that's seemingly all plastic. It shot nice. Not my style, but it did shoot nice.

I also have a Beretta Bobcat. It's not so much a plinker, as it is a micro/pocket pistol. The nice thing about those, with .22lr being so small, you get about the same capacity as you would with a regular pistol.

I live in suburbia where the HOA frowns upon firearms being shot. But I can shoot my TX22 suppressed in my backyard no issue. To plink or shoot at the occasional rat. Yes, there are rats running around at night. I use subsonic ammo.

Taurus TX22

I have one of these. Looking back, I would have gotten a Glock 44, but not for performance reasons, just because it would match my Glock 45. The Taurus is very good and very affordable.

If you go with the ruger, make sure to get the mk4. I have the mk3. While I love it, it can be a little difficult to reassemble after cleaning.

Just got a Taurus TX22.

It's nice and won't break the bank.

eta: Put about 200 rounds of the cheapest stuff on the shelf through it...multiple brands. Straight out of the box without cleaning it to test it. Performed flawlessly.

I have been very happy with my Taurus tx22. Reliable with cheap ammo, and I like the capacity.

My Taurus TX 22 runs like a champ! $300, and got 3 extra mags for free.

Don't get a high-capacity mag semi auto, not enough blowback and they hang up....plus they need cleaning more than I like....or they really will not operate properly.
Bought the Sig P322 and regretted it.

Tx22 competition with red dot and a suppressor is a LOT of fun.

I have a Ruger mk4 10 inch bullbarrel. Amazingly accurate. Take down in 10 seconds to clean. I just put a scope on it.

Eats all .22. Easy to clean. Easy to change barrels. Absolutely love mine.
