Is it worth spending $700 to suppress the AR? To limit muzzle flash and concussion?

It was my "reasoning" for building a 300 BLK. I mean, it didn't hurt that I just wanted one, but it was the justification I used in telling my wife I needed to spend the money . And it is a true advantage to being able to communicate to family members without everyone's eardrums blown out.

With kids I still don't have a good set up for storing the AR in the bedroom securely. I have my 9mm handguns. It's what I practice with the most, so still feel most competent getting to those quickly.

Should it be pistol-length or is maneuverability not really a concern?

If you do suppress, I'd go SBR or pistol. My 8.2" barrel and a 7" suppressor is equivalent to just over a 14" barrel AR. You'd be +/- 22" with a standard 16" barrel which is a bit long in my opinion.

If it were me, having no children in my house, I’d keep a Glock 43x with a streamlight attached, in my bed. A Glock 23 40 cal, suppressed, on the night stand. A youth model semi auto 20ga loaded with #2’s on side of the bed. And a 12ga loaded with 00 buckshot in the closet, on side of the safe with extra shells on top of the safe. I just don’t trust my ability to type in a 6 digit code under that kind of stress. Obviously my go to is the 20ga, but the 43x with the light is the quickest to grab.

Worth consideration. In a safe during the day, in this, relatively high up on a wall at night, seems like a good option.

Also, anyone want to chime in on 300 blk? Is it the perfect home defense caliber?

At this point, I think overpenetration is a problem with almost every caliber, so I don’t see that as a deciding factor.

I’ve been straining at the bit to get a 300, but so far I haven’t pulled the trigger.

I think a 10” 300 blk with a suppressor, shooting heavy subsonics would be a badass home defense gun. Low recoil, very little noise, a lightweight and short gun to maneuver, and hitting somebody with a 220gr 30 cal bullet at close range would make them have a really bad day.

Only drawback for 300 BLK I've found is ammo is expensive and not a huge variety of defensive type rounds. I just started reloading and can get Hornady Subx 190 grain at around .70 cents per round. Not that you need hundreds of rounds of defensive ammo, but I like to shoot my defensive rounds a lot to be comfortable they cycle.

Keep your pistol on your night stand and have an AR/shotgun nearby, under the bed or in the closet.

This. A pistol, knife, and flashlight next to your bed. An AR nearby.

I’ve been on a special forces podcast/ YouTube run lately at work and this is almost a unanimous choice. Pistol is fast, it’s agile, easily locked up next to your bed and it’s maneuverable. Non concealed you can have 20 round mags easily. Almost everyone suggests the pistol first to secure your bedroom, then secure your kids, then grab the AR from there.

I don’t think a SBR is a bad choice at all. But as said I think locking them up and having the wife comfortable with it/ around it is a major factor.

These guys likely prayed on her because she was an old rich lady. Most middle aged men have very little to worry about.

I’m looking at turning the outdoor pool storage into a safe room in my new house. I kept his and her pistols in the night stands with a 870 tactical under the bed.

New house would have a wooden wall with a hidden door in the master next to the bed. Not sure how crazy I want to get but it would look something like this and be a walk in safe.

Not sure how I’ll do the hidden door with a vault door behind it but I’ll figure it out.
