How is it dying when shrimp is the top consumed seafood?
I guess I should have clarified. Wild caught shrimp is a dying industry. Louisiana shrimp is only something like 20% of the market.
They are powerless in their ability to raise the price by limiting supply. Most of them are indebted to the docks they sell to with loans and need them to buy ice and can not sell independently.

Shrimp is the number one seafood in USA. However, USA shrimp is not the number one seafood in USA. If you are buying shrimp from a boat, simply ask them to put three pounds of shrimp on a scale (which every good shrimper has on his boat), then divide by 3 and that is your count. Based your purchase price on that count. Because the seafood docks have being screwing the commercial fisherman so much, straight run, may be available on some boats.

It’s a dying industry gone the way of whaling, Buffalo hunting, beaver trapping and running deer with dogs!!
Imported shrimp is killing the industry. It’s sad how most people in Louisiana wouldn’t touch a Chinese crawfish, but they don’t seem to care where their shrimp comes from.

I did. I took the kids to Galatoire's and then to get sandwiches at Domilise's. Then down to Venice and caught 60 really nice trout in about 2 hours on the beaches above Sandy Point. On July 4th we went up to the racetrack in Marrero and raced go karts for a couple of hours. Really fun road trip with the kids. And came home with 50# of shrimp and 50# of trout fillets.
I mean if you are going anyway and happen to have an extra cooler or two…..
But I can remember driving down to grand isle with my dad to buy shrimp and bring home de head and put in freezer ….. but BJs in Hammond has fresh shrimp for the same or better prices that most people can get at the dock

Yea thats what i thought. But i figure freshness counts for alot, plus we like the heads to make stock and shrimper has to feed his family too so I dont make an issue of it. And i dont habe to drive ti Hammond or venice with the price of diesel fuel.

Couple more of these $13 a pound seasons and Wu will be selling crawfish here.
The guys on the shrimp boats aren't making much. Spending $800-$1200 on fuel, ice, groceries to go out and bust arse for a week to sell your catch for $2.75 a pound on the side of the road or less at the shrimp shed is a rough life. If you have a breakdown on the boat of any kind any profit for that trip is out the window.

I graduated in 95. Had quite a few friends who followed in their father's footsteps and went on to be commercial fisherman, mostly trawling. A lot of them have since got out of it. Those guys would work their summers on boats and come back flush with cash.
10/15s at the dock were $4-4.50 a pound back then, diesel was 89 cents. Not thr paying $1.75 for shrimp and deisel is $3.75-4 a gallon.
Bottom line, you can buy a fresh, never frozen, great tasting and versatile 100% organic protein for less that boneless, skinless, flavorless chicken breast, or ground meat.

I live on Bayou Terrebonne and buy shrimp from my neighbors. Last bought in
May and he said they were 10 count. When I looked at them they were beautiful, caught the night before but I knew they weren’t quite 10 count.
So I put them up that afternoon, deheaded and put 50 in each pack. Did the math at the end total shrimp/50# and they were 13 count, but I was happy.
Shrimpers are selling so they are usually inclined to round up.

Sometimes they're 10/16s and sometimes they're 16/20s. But over 4th of July week this year they were $2.75.
The wife and I hit up the Westwego Seafood lot this past weekend for 10 lbs. of large shrimp. They were $2.75 a lb. and when we got home I weighed out 5 lbs. for us to boil and the rest to be shelled and frozen for later use.
After I weighed out the 5 lbs. I decided to count them and it was exactly 60 shrimp in the container-------so 12 to the lb.
I'm going back over there this week to get another 25 lbs. at that price after making room in the freezer for more.

2.75 per pound for 16 count is very good.

Who cares if the count is a smidge off. You are paying a price per pound. The count is just aftermath. Are you going to tell me the 15-20 count taste drastically different than 20-30s? The same can be said for popcorn shrimp. If you are frying them, does it matter on the count (size) or if you got the right amount of pounds.

When were you there? I hammered the redfish right there two weeks ago.
