That's my thoughts as well, get good with that 308 and he's golden.

If he's shooting a .308 to 600 yds, he will need a very good scope and a good range finder. A first focal plane would be best.

175 gr bullet at 600 yds out of the .308 will drop 90"+

Agreed on that, he's looking to spare no expense on optics.

I have one ad there isn't a better scope made, but it's heavy.

300RUM is the only caliber he will ever need.

Get a suppressor and shooting becomes fun again. I’ve spent as much on ammo I’ve shot as I did on my suppressors. I shot 50 rounds of 300 aac and a few 308 today at lunch and can’t wait to do it again. My 7 year old also loves shooting. Hell my 3 year old shoots my 300 aac scout without muffs and loves it. Suppressors should be SOP.

I’m surprised that no one has given the obvious answer: the 6.5 Manbun… basically no drop inside 1,500 yards and deadlier than the Ebola virus. I heard that the Marine Corps was thinking about issuing new rifles in 6.5CM to all scout snipers but decided against it because of concerns that it might be a violation of the Geneva Convention to issue something so lethal.

Yea, it really is the obvious answer. Given the choices in OP though, 6.5 prc is objectively the correct choice.

.308 excels at barrel life, something few hunters ever need to worry about. At 500 yards the 6.5 is going to give better margin on wind calls

If I am shooting a 7mm rifle for hunting it’s my prewar model 70 7x57 but that’s just me

6.5 PRC

I prefer .30-06 and up for elk, but it will get the job done in most situations.

Sorry, I should have added, he doesn't want the recoil of the magnums or 30-06.

I shot buddies 300wby with can and it had less recoil than my 270

The right brake and suppressor can cut the recoil down a whole whole lot.

6.5 cripplemore is really the correct answer. The recoil between .308 and .30-06 is very similar. 6.5 peckersucker is a little lighter on the shoulder and bucks the wind a lot better. Screw a good can on that and you've got a complete pussycat that will kill elk as far as you can hit them

I was reluctant on 300wby but he said his 9yo shot it, probably close to 243 recoil.

I shot my buddies 300wm Christian arms with a light scope and can and my reply to him was “it feels less than 308 maybe a 243”!!
You can somewhat spot impacts through the scope at 500yd

The fact that rifles dont come with a suppressor as standard equipment in the US is rediculous.

The "standard" deer rifle in 2025 should be a tikka t3 .30-06 with an 18" barrel and a printed titanium 6" long suppressor. It should all come in a box with a nice little letter from the non hunters saying thanks for keeping the woods quiet.
