I will be going by an indoor range next week to check on the CC requirements and classes. I am thinking the S&W 9mm shield will be my best option with an OWB holster. I need to find a place where I can actually try some holsters with my S&W. I like the look of this one.

1) What do y'all do when you are sitting/driving your vehicle? Do you take the handgun/holster out? This seems like the most uncomfortable.
2) Would you take a one on one or a group class?
3) What is the distance for the live firing? I have access to a outdoor range I could practice on whenever it warms up some.
1) I might use a shoulder holster or cross draw. Or you might set it under your weak side leg.
2) Depends on the budget, instructor availability and needs.
3) Start at 10 yards and work various situations before increasing distance. Most real shooting situations are pretty close.
Something that you have left out is dry fire exercise. You will learn more from dry fire than you will from live fire. You might get one of the chamber laser inserts to see where you are hitting. Proper grip, trigger control and sight alignment can be worked from home - after clearing the gun; removing all ammo from the area and selecting a totally safe area to practice toward. Check it all again - every time you change anything or take a break. Jerry Miculek has a good YouTube video on thumbs high forward grip and dry firing.

I have these already that I have not tried yet.

I also have this. I figured I could set up a target in my garage to do some practices.

I have free access to an outdoor range about 15 minutes from me (I can hear the gunshots from my house) where the indoor range is about 45 minutes away. This process may drag out until warmer weather comes and stays.

Would a handgun in the door pocket of my truck be considered concealed?

I have a dot on a couple of my full size pistols and I like them and they make longer shots easier. However, and this is just my opinion. I don't like anything on my cc pistol. Just the iron sights. My thought is that I don't want anything to possibly snag on a draw when my life is on the line. I also figure that if my life is on the line, the shot will be within 15 yards and I have no problem putting all 14 rounds where they need to be. If I need to take a longer shot i'm still pretty good with just the iron sights.
Just my opinion.

No Laser. They are worthless
Sorry dude…30 years of military and LE experience here and lasers - whether visible or IR - are game changers and worth the $.
The amount of people who post out of their derriere on subjects they have no experience with is mind numbing.

LEO expert on CNN said yesterday only SWAT and Tier 1 guys use lasers on their guns. It’s a sign of advanced training. He was responding to a report that the Brown university shooter had a laser.
These “experts” they use normally just make shite up.
Remember when law enforcement said this was the deadliest bullet known to man and should be outlawed?
They mention SWAT and Tier-1 using laser because they are trained. Realistically those are the only groups that routinely practice firing their weapon. Almost all others only fire their weapon when it’s time to recertify every year - especially the ones that only work behind a desk.
And just about every officer on the street now carries a less than lethal weapon with a laser on it. I’m sure the expert conveniently left that part out.

I checked with my brother and he carries a 380 and it has a clip on it which he clips onto his belt.

1) Do I want a laser sight on it?
No, they're just about useless outdoors in daylight. I don't mind them for bedside guns.

4) Should I carry concealed or open carry)
Concealed. Why advertise you have a gun?

4) What type of holster for concealed carry and where to carry on my body (hip/back/etc)?
The type that is about the 5th or 6th one you buy if you're lucky.

I talked to a CC instructor today about the class and live fire segments. I need enough magazines to fire 50 rounds. I would have to hit the B-27 target inside the "7" ring 35 of the 50 rounds. I need to find some decently priced magazines and I need to hit the range to practice. The live fire segment has three parts from 3 yards (20 rounds), 10 yards (20 rounds) and 15 yards (10 rounds).

Not sure what state or instructor you are using for your CC but I do not know anyone who has ever failed it, my wife and MIL both passed it. I asked the instructor my first time qualifying if he has ever had anyone fail and he said one guy. He claimed that the dude was very cocky and didn’t even want to have to shoot it and made a joke how he could hit the target from the hip. Said he shot from the hip and hit paper but missed the “man” . Said he failed him, might have been lying about it but it’s almost impossible to fail the live fire portion required for louisiana.

I was going to use my S&W 9mm shield, but I only have two magazines for it. I have four 17 round magazines for my SAR9, so I will practice and use it for the live rounds segment.

Are you sure you need to have mags loaded?!? Our instructor made us shoot 50 shots but it was slow fire and we loaded mags after dumping one!!
I would ask them specifically

I believe so, but I will talk to another instructor tomorrow.

Conceal. IWB unless I’m in the woods.

Yea, do this, but it shouldnt matter. You just have to reload once at each target, it technically doesnt matter how you do it.

After visiting the second CC instructor I have my info straightened out. The first instructor gave me the info for a combo basic and enhanced permit. The live fire requirements for the basic permit is hitting the target 15 out of 20 rounds shot at 15'. There is no time requirement. He even made the comment we make sure everyone passes.

If you're a military veteran, you can conceal carry without attending any classes for a permit in Louisiana.

I suggest concealed carry. In a situation where you need the gun, you don’t want the perp to know you’re armed beforehand. Keep element of surprise
