Sunday evening about 5 pm, she was on the front porch with me and I noticed a few drops of blood when she stood up. I couldn't find a wound and she was acting normally. When I went back outside around 9 pm, she was in bad shape. Couldn't get up or lie down without great difficulty. We only have copperheads and timber rattlers up here. Took her to the vet and found fang marks about 3/4 inch apart inside her upper left leg. Looked like she squatted to pee or $hit and got nailed. Still at the vet's right now. Hope she doesn't lose that leg or has to be put down? 58 lbs and a lab/husky mix. Just a mutt, but she's part of the family.

copper head shell be fine. Timber rattler could be different. Depends on amount of venom, age, weight, how hot/active she was at the time. More than likely she'll pull threw. I hope for the best for you and your family.

This. Granted I’ve come across only a couple canebreakers but they definitely are known to pack a bigger punch.

That said a lab mutt at 60 ILBs is a tough dog. She’ll pull through and thinking of her. Keep us posted please

At 3/4" apart I'd put my money on copperhead.

When my dog got tagged they were telling me usually about a foot per 1/4. My dog took it right behind his eye, on top of the head. Right at 1.25" apart. Lived another 11+ years, but did require 2 vials antivenin. Best of luck to your pup

Hoping all goes well for your dog. Dogs are amazingly tough animals hopefully the full load of venom wasn't delivered and all will be good. Please update us as you can and prayers in the meantime.

Frankly, it sort of proves itself - a full dose by a rattlesnake and she would have been in much worse shape (or gone) by now.

I had a soldier get 1 fang to the calf (rattler) at Fort Hood and he wasn't right for months. They froze part of his calf as part of the therapy.

Dogs are tougher than people, though. If she's doing better, she'll probably pull through.

Copperhead is the one dogs seem to handle a little better. Even heard so from the vet last time our dogs got bit.

The wound location is troublesome though, that's pretty close to the heart so the venom is circulating easily. Hopefully she's good after a vial or 2 of antivenom.

both of mine got copperheaded a few years ago…the little one did fine just wound care but the big one was in bad shape. She got two vials and a blood transfusion and very nearly didn’t make it (fine now).

It varies dog to dog and bite to bite

positive vibes to the OP and his pooch

Keep some benadryll at the house in case your dog gets bit. Thats all they will give at some vets.

“They froze part of his calf as part of the therapy”

That didn’t happen. Some years ago the recommendation was to put a cold pack on the bite site,to slow down the spread of the venom.
They had people coming to E.R.with limbs immersed in ice chests. So then not only did they have a snake bite, they had frostbite limbs to contend with.

Spoke with the vet about an hour ago. She's on IV's now. Gonna keep her another night at least. She's walking some now and doesn't have as much trouble getting up or lying down like she did yesterday. Quite a bit of swelling and pain, though. Another poster mentioned one foot for each quarter inch of fang distance. Didn't know that! We're in a severe drought up here and she was down at the pond while our grandson was fishing. I figure the snake came down from the mountain to get water? I've encountered timbers down there in years past when we were in drought conditions. Who knows, though. She could have got nailed anywhere here on the place. I'll know more tomorrow.

I should've added where I'm from, FL, for what species they considered that a vague guideline for. Could be generally ok for most north American pit vipers

Glad to see your pup is recovering quickly. Hope that trend continues on.

If your dog is past 48 hours should be fine, I swear I had seen water moccasins in your area, I grew up there but I was not as snake wise then hell still not. Good luck on the recovery let us know.
