Running deer dogs on public is standard procedure in most of MS.

Give stand hunters a wide berth unless on a main trail. Help dog hunters find a dog, drag a deer, etc. I've made friends just complementing dogs that ran a deer to me on my place.

Deer dogs are illegal on about half the public land in Mississippi.

Unfortunately not the ones I hunt. They are full up with trucks and dog boxes with La plates on them.

i dont do any duck hunting (although i really want to) and know tons of people that do do it, are there alot of negative interactions while public land duck hunting?

I think public duck hunting spots are a lot worse than deer in my opinion. Much more competitive.

This is going to be my first time hunting WMA in Louisiana, to be more specific, area 4. The loranger tract is going to be my first choice, since its the closest. Anyone have tips/tricks/info they would be willing to share?

Like others, i dont want to screw up someone hunting. 649 acres seems like it would be easy to get up on someone. I wish there was info on how much the property used (posting the clearing station data would be awesome).

Damn 649 acres! And I worry about walking up on somebody on the 40,000 acre WMA in MS that I hunt. Only advice I can give is make sure you have your orange on.

Ill try to dig it up when I'm on PC tomorrow but ldwf usually posts how many hunter attempts and harvests there were. I might be thinking of the mandatory check in hunts. Should still give you an idea if so.

yes, i did manage to find that info. idk if i could find it again.
It only had 2 of the 5 (that i know of) tangi properties; joyce and sandy hollow. the school board has 3 properties in the <700 acre variety. 1 in loranger, 1 in husser, and 1 in kentwood. i did see any data on those.
sandy had data, but lord was it terrible. chatter online says its lots of pine needles and no deer. idk, i havent been there. seems to be popular with dove hunters. i think they control burn that one. joyce is the swamp and well thats above my pay grade. i dont like snakes or getting wet

lots of the deer in joyce/maurepas die of natural causes (and well deserved) in there. that terrain is incredibly hard to hunt. it just shows how resilient some of these louisiana hunters are when they kill mature deer there

I have an incredible amount of respect for people hunt there.

That’s between 5 total days of either sex gun hunts, right? It’s still pretty awful. I wonder how many of those hunters saw does, but passed on the opportunity, to wait for a buck.
I’ll be honest, my success on public land bucks has been with my rifle. I hunt with my rifle as much as possible. I chase both the rut, and the rifle seasons, across the state. Once the rifle seasons are over with, I pick up my bow.
With that said, bow season is my favorite time to be in the woods. I’ve had a lot of close encounters with some very nice bucks during bow season. Bucks that probably stay hidden all day during gun season. I do the majority of my scouting during bow season as well.
My advice would be to get in there during bow, do a lot of scouting, and stay mobile on your hunts. I’m sure there’s a good bit of deer being killed out there that aren’t recorded in that data because they’re killed outside of those either sex gun hunts.
I’ve never been to sandy hollow, but from looking at some aerial maps, it looks like it should hold some decent deer.

If you’re reading the same harvest report I am, it lists the wma, hunter efforts and what was harvested under “table 6”. If you look right above that, it says that it’s the report for the “either-sex managed deer hunts”. Which on sandy hollow is only 2 weekends. The first weekend is Friday-Sunday and the second weekend is only Saturday and Sunday. Meaning those 126 efforts and 2 does, was only 5 days of the season.

So creek bottoms, people use them often? it makes sense. when i did my post season scouting, i saw a ladder stand in the bottom i was traversing. i originally thought that ole baw hunting it was gonna get pissed at me walking past it had that been during the season.

I don’t hunt many areas with creek bottoms in Louisiana, but in Missouri, I don’t find people travel them as much as you would think. I find up there, most people use access trails, and don’t venture too far from them. One of my main strategies is walking creek bottoms to find crossings. They’re great for quiet access, and they keep your scent mostly contained to the bottom so you don’t blow out deer you may be walking by.

so if you just go blindly walking through the woods you're likely gonna screw someone up
