Availability of ammunition in what you choose should play a part in the decision process.

Older calibers = greater availability or it used too. It's all scarce and expensive now.

Here you go. A $2000.00 rifle, seriously you won’t find them for less than that, on sale for $499.00. The quality is unequaled in a production rifle.

Mauser M12

As best I can tell, this particular variant was mainly offered only in Europe. A few were made for the American market before they decided not to sell them and this place bought up all the remaining stock and is blowing them out.

Agree on .25-06. Great caliber.

Any of the major calibers will kill a deer just as dead as another. A lot of the ballistics arguing is just picking fly shite out of the pepper.

Ruger American and Savage Axis are great entry level rifles that won't break your budget.

Had a great post until he said this:

Don’t get a .243 or 6.5 Needmore for your first deer rifle as a grown man. You can handle adult-size recoil so buy an adult-size caliber that packs more punch and gives you more room for error.

Just an idiotic statement. Truly stupid.

Get whatever you can also buy ammo for.

7mm08
308
30-06
35 Remington
243

There are lots of good guns in good deer calibers, but there isn’t much ammo. That won’t change for a while.

In deer rifles I have:

6.5x55
.270
7mm-08
7x57
.280
30-30
.308
30-06
8x57
9.3x57
9.3x62
45-70

They all work. Though, people will differ, I notice a little better performance starting at 7mm. Velocity helps too, and I haven’t had one single deer drop on the spot after being shot with a 45-70. That said, they didn’t go far and they left plenty of blood.

The most one shot, drop them in their tracks, kills were with a 30-06 and 150 grain bullets.

What is non-factual about that statement? All calibers I mentioned, 7mm-08, .308, .280 and 30-06, all pack more punch than either a .243 or a 6.5 Needmore and give you more margin for error if your shot isn’t perfect. Why buy either of those calibers when you can handle something bigger and you’re only buying one rifle (for now)?

.280 is great if you handload. Otherwise, factory ammo doesn’t get the most out of it. Great round that never got the attention it deserved. If a 7mm-08 is good, a 7mm-06 is great.

I see what you did there. Any idea where I can find one of these 7-06's? I've heard they were hard to find before the gun/ammo shortage, so I'm sure they're really hard to find now.

They are nearly as hard to find as the 7mm Express.

You used to could find some vintage ammo marked 7mm Express, but that’s even hard to do now.

This in a 308. I got it this season to replace my Remington Model 700 30-06 & 243 and have been really pleased.

Wow! Not one mention of a Browning.

The xbolt is an excellent rifle. My experience is with a 300 win mag and it shoots lights out. The bolt on the xbolt is second to none (very smooth action).

Pretty slim selection and Bowie and Jim's on Saturday. I did get to look at a Tikka. Nice rifle. I really like the Browning Hell's Canyon too.

Don't overlook scout rifles as an option either. I have a Ruger GSR .308, it is a fun rifle and I've seen at least one in stock at every shop I've been to recently.

I have a browning hells canyon x bolt in 6.5 CM. Great gun and couldn’t recommend it any more. Though as a single deer rifle I wouldn’t recommend the 6.5 CM caliber. I’d probably say the 308 or 270.

School me on the .280 and the 6.5x55. Why aren't they more popular?

The 6.5 came from Europe. It was often found in a European army surplus rifle in the old days. We had the .270 in the states, so it never got a big following. Similar to the 7x57. Great round, just wasn’t an American caliber.
The .280 was held back by poor marketing and underpowered factory rounds. The 06 and 270 were already out. It just didn’t do anything different than rounds that were already out. They changed the name to 7mm express to pump it up. This led to confusion with the 7mm rem mag.
A hand loader can get amazing performance out of the 280 and even better from the 280AI.
