I would say hen just going by the eyes. The drakes usually keep the bill colors. Here was a drake losing its colors.

They flew in to this marshy area. I kind of thought they would not be able to fly about this time period.

Here is a Drake from 2022 during the eclipse molt. You can still see the teardrop patch under his eye. This bird could not fly for about 2 more weeks.

I know they are causing some issues at places like Audubon Park, but these might be my favorite ducks. They are very fun to watch, beautiful birds, and pretty tame relative to other wild ducks. Also they eat good

Whistlers mate basically for life similar to geese and swans so you almost always see them in couple pairs

I saw these on different days in the same crawfish pond...these shots are from May 29th and June 5th...I also saw babies one day, but they swam into the grass before I could take any pictures...

So, one year later and the first visitor was today. Hooded mergansers. No idea where all my wood ducks are. I guess they don't have a calendar.

Mine don't show up until the day after hunting season closes.

Kinda late, but hens are checking out the boxes. The cat squirrel has been eaten and access limbs cleared.

Did mine last weekend. They are wood duck boxes but here in Lafayette the Tree ducks are taking over. Not sure if they coexist and incubate each other’s eggs but believe so now but suspect the tree ducks will eventually push our native wood ducks away. I’d like to see WLF help our wood duck population. In my pond which is used for breeding it’s declined 50% easy. And Iam not City .

I put 5 out today. I used 4x4’s and got some of those spikes to fix to the bottom. Need to go back next weekend and hit them with a sledgehammer instead of the little 4lb hammer. May not survive a hurricane but they’re fine for now. Did it solo and it was definitely more of a job than I anticipated ha. Nice day though.

I've been lucky in that the whistling ducks haven't been too interested in mine until after the woodies are mostly through. I do have mergansers looking though.

I ordered some online. I did have to alter them a little to fit the poles I had already had cut from one of the fence supply stores nearby

I took boxes down. Mine were too close together and there were empty boxes next to used boxes. I've also seen too much nest dumping.
