Sounds like it could possibly be a Chandeleur multi day trip?

save for the 30lbs pp. I'd buy 20lbs,
I feel like the 20 can dig in but the 30 doesn’t. Personal preference but I say 30.

Agree.
If that combo is in the higher range of your budget, the Penn Pursuit combo is a decent budget setup for saltwater use. For either setup your going to want the 250-300 series.

Agreed. Also with the 20, he'll get back home and be wondering what all those painful nicks are in the bends of his fingers after grabbing line all weekend.

I used 30# on client rods simply because all of the stupid shite they do with them. Casting into trees/rocks10yds, booking crab floats, wind knots. Switched my bait casters to 30# years ago for more durability while wade fishing. No real difference in casting difference, hook set or sensitivity but that’s only my opinion, you do you.

This came up in a spinning context. No digging. I almost never go above 15lb braid for spinning and most of mine are 8lb. Casting is a different conversation.

Am I the only one who he thinks he should go Medium Heavy in 7ft if targeting reds? He'll likely be throwing a popping cork if he's kinda new to fishing.
Falcon HD Spinning 7' MH
Pair that with an Okuma Safyre 2500 and you've got a quality rig.

Pretty sure you are
Have caught 25# reds on my ML Waterloo rods, sling a cork with a M Waterloo. IMO there’s no need for MH to catch reds.

Truth be told I was on a spec trip a few months back obviously throwing my Falcon Coastal in medium fast and landed a 32" red. Took 10 minutes but it's doable. But just because you can doesn't make it the best option IMO.

Medium is plenty for redfish unless specifically targeting large bull redfish in which case a heavy action and size 4000 or larger reel would be better suited. The mediums can handle those also if you have some good braid but you have to wear them down for a while. Medium action will be more versatile for targeting slot reds and trout and would be my choice.

7’ (anything bw 6’10” & 7’6” is fine)
Medium power
Moderate fast action
I bought a Daiwa Procyon for like $90 awhile back because a bunch of OBers recommended them. It is an unbelievable rod for any price, and just as good as my more expensive rods.
