I feel bad making a bad shot on an animal. I've had to slit two throats and I get no enjoyment out of that.

I agree with that. I don't feel bad about killing but I don't get any enjoyment out of watching an animal suffer.

I feel absolutely horrible every time I wound an animal and do not find it.

I get sick and completely disgusted with myself.

The worst is when you have to pick up a duck that is wounded and ring its neck. I get no enjoyment out of that.

One time this duck just would not die...spoonie. I rung it like three times to no avail. I paused. Took a breath and decided to give it one last go. I rung it as hard as I could and his body detached from his head and flew 15 ft in the air. His wings and feet were still going....

So this is one of those cute, tree hugging drive by posts, made only to incite rage in hunters on here??

Sorry bud, ain't gonna happen. You ventured onto the coolest board, with the most laid back guys on this site. We will start feeling guilty about shooting animals,... well as I typed he first part of this sentence I couldn't think of anything witty to close with. We will never feel guilty about it. I eat 90% of what I kill, and it actually had a fighting chance at survival. Livestock meat their demise while standing in a stable. SWIDT?

I actually think it is a legitimate question. I don't think guilt is the right word, but I think every hunter should at least feel some sort of respect for the animal after killing it.

Ok, but you ask a question like that, then you dont come back to discuss the subject?

Felt lots of different things depending on the situation, but guilt was never one of them.

It should be something that we could discuss among ourselves

I think its been a mutual response that guilt isnt an emotion felt when harvesting an animal. If it was, or ever had been, i probably wouldnt be hunting today. BTW, what was the acronym in the OP?

I shot a squirrel a few years ago and he hit the ground and started crying. I stomped on his head and it just made him cry more. I picked him up by the tail and banged his head against a tree and then he started slowly wimpering. I did it again and part of his tail came off. I then shot him in the head from 1 ft with a 20 gauge. I felt bad for that little feller. Now I take a .22 revolver squirrel hunting with me.

Also when I was in high school we were playing football at a park and there was a possom by the tree (endzone). I picked up a 2" diameter stick and chunked it at him to scare him off. It stuck him right in the head and he rolled over, playing possom right? Nope, he was dead as a hammer and bleeding from the side of the head. I don't know why, I guess cause I wasn't trying to kill him, but I felt a little bad about that too. Maybe it was because now we had a dead possom on the field.

I actually thought the same thing. Paired with the fact he is a new member and did not come back and discuss the subject which he started. Plus, the use of the word 'innocent'...if you eat meat, you have eaten an 'innocent' animal.

Yeah..a coon. Wounded one and was crying like a baby. Haven't coon hunted since.

And anytime I don't recover wounded game. Fortunately this seldom happens, but it'll bother me for weeks. Hate killing an animal that doesn't get eaten. I will only hunt animals I will eat.

I don't feel guilty for harvesting an animal to eat. I also don't feel bad killing an animal that is causing a nuisance, i.e. wild hog (though I will also eat the right hog).

However, I don't kill things "just because" or for fun. I killed one song bird accidentally as a kid and I still feel bad about it. I feed the birds and squirrels in my back yard because I like to see them. (If I see a squirrel in the woods, he is fair game.)

I also feel bad if I make a bad shot and do not cleanly harvest an animal.

My one bit of hypocrisy is that I will kill a poisonous snake.

As I've gotten older (matured?), I look back on some that I wouldn't shoot now. But don't wish I hadn't shot them. Each was a way of honing my skills whether it was quick drawing my pistol, taking a running shot, or shooting off hand at a long distance. These days a lot of critters that I would have sent to the promised land when I was younger, get a pass from me. Now, if the opportunity arises for me to try a shot that I haven't tried in a while I'll try it.

I do feel guilty if an opportunity presents itself for me to kill an animal that needs killing and I pass it up. This year I've passed on two deer that were shooters. They haunt me.

Had to knock a puppy in the head with a hammer handle when I was a kid. Puppy had a cleft palate and couldn't eat. Had to hit it twice cause I balked on the first swing. It sucked, but it had to be done.
