I’m on my way to southeast Arizona right now - 13 species of rattlesnakes for me to catch there!

The most venomous rattler I’ve caught so far was the Eastern diamondback in the ‘glades in May - my buddy who got tagged by one needed 88 vials of antivenin. But Arizona has the Tiger rattlesnake and the Mojave, both of which have extremely more potent venom…approximately 5-6x more toxic. Wish me luck!

Play with fire eventually you gonna get burned. I don’t handle venomous snakes. Not worth the risk for me.

I didn't know there were that many species of rattlesnakes.

Yep - there are around 32 species of rattlesnakes in the US, plus many subspecies. I’ve caught 7 species so far. Hoping to double that over the next week.

Want to know a sure fire way to not get bit by a rattlesnake?

Don't try to pick it up.

Not dying is immensely more fun than dying.

It seems like the social media snake handlers are inspiring some serious Darwin award winners.

Some friends of mine had an incident at their 4th of July Party at a lake house where a 20 something year old woman (intoxicated) started handling baby copperheads, insisting she knew all about snakes and owns several. Needless to say she got bit repeatedly, tried to play it off, and they ended up having to rush her to an ER (without any real sober drivers). She eventually got med flighted to another hospital and got an extended stay there. The last I'd heard, it was still touch and go on whether she might lose some fingers or not. Needless to say, it was a pretty big buzz kill for their party.

thats a hell of a party

ol girl went from living it up in her mid-20's to possibly being in huge amounts of medical debt and maybe minus a few fingers.

Give us a history of your desire and when it happened.
Have you always had a fascination with herps?

I’ll give you a run down when I get a chance later. Went to sleep at 5 am and heading back out in a few minutes.
Got 4 species of rattlesnake in West Texas last night (my best ever) - 5 Western diamondbacks, an Ornate black-tailed rattlesnake, a mottled rock rattlesnake, and a gorgeous Mojave! And got to handle each species!

Party at a lake house in the woods. Snakes are not uncommon in the Arkansas woods.

I actually saw a similar incident with methed out rednecks at a swimming hole when I was in grad school in Arkansas. Except he was catching the baby copperheads for his terrarium. But he also got nailed and ended up with a trip to the ER.

I mean, I live on a private lake. There are snakes everywhere, but to know specifically where multiple babies are?
