Typical OB turns into a pissing contest on unrelated shite
Basic Hunter safety prevents almost 100% of hunting injuries. As a Hunter safety instructor, there is a reason these courses are repetitive to the point of achieving a level of preaching. Almost every hunting related injury reported every year is a result of basic stupidity. One thing I emphasize on teaching that you never hunt with anyone that doesn’t take safety as serious as you.
Granted the incident listed in OP was from 2 hunters that likely didn’t have hunter safety. One thing we all know is that we are responsible for our own safety and that when participating in outdoor activities each one of us should promote safe practices to help ensure a positive experience for not only ourselves, but to maintain a healthy public perception of leaders in the outdoors

He was shooting a 12 gauge #6 (lead) shot. I had something like 180 pellets in me, so I caught about half the pattern. I was lucky in a sense, when the group of us started out that morning, he’d planned to use high velocity #4 shot he had from duck hunting, another guy loaned him the shells he was using. I was sitting cross legged, the stock of my gun had 18 pellets in it that would have hit my tender vegetation otherwise, and no pellets above my collarbone. A number of them have worked their way out over the years, but I still carry well over 100 in me. Had to have a knuckle operated on to remove several and that finger doesn’t fully close, and a tendon in my foot that was shot in half repaired, so now I have two toes that are synchronized.
Remember like it was yesterday. A long ride up Bayou Manchac in a bateau, a long drive down a gravel road to the hospital in Ascension Parish and an ambulance ride to the old BRG midcity location for the first surgery. In those days, there were almost no private rooms, and my two older roommates were quite interesting to a college student.

Damn, that’s amazing. At least it wasn’t buck shot.
Are you still friends with the dude?

I am philosophically opposed to hunter orange requirements on private land. I don't need Nanny Gubmint to keep me safe.
Besides, I think that the laws, on the face of it, are ridiculous. I can stalk hunt with my rifle all morning and have to wear orange. I can literally walk to my truck, put my rifle away, take off my orange, go for a pleasure stroll and not be required to wear anything orange.
On top of that, how many hunters are killed each year accidentally by gunfire? What fraction of those cases would hunter orange have made a difference? Contrast that with the millions of hunters in the woods multiple times each over the course of a season. Statistically, is this really a problem that needs government intervention on private property? Public land I have no problem with it. But, there are damned few things that justify government intrusion into private property or affairs; and something this miniscule is not one of them.

Please use a light when you are walking out.Even if you think there is nobody else around. Deer don’t care. Orange is a must but can’t be seen at twilight.

Another hunter was recently killed on Sandy Hollow WMA. Not many details out yet

Orange is a great idea. A look back in history-
During the 1972-73 season, 80 Mississippi hunters were shot and 34 of them died. Read that again — 80 shot, 34 deaths, all the result of deer hunting accidents. On one day at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, three hunters arrived at the emergency room with gunshot wounds; one of them survived.

hole-E-shite! Talk about a war zone
I can understand the orange rule just from the standpoint of first responders having to deal with entering a scene where the uncle just shot his nephew in the head on the family property. Thats probably the worst thing a game warden will experience in his career. Do that 4-5 times and they will start wanting a law requiring orange.

When was this? I went a few weeks ago and there were a sh*t load of first responders out there. I'd heard it was a dude who fell out of his stand and was hanging in his harness.

Agents received information about a hunter that was fatally shot by another hunter on the Sandy Hollow WMA around 8:45 a.m. on Dec. 28. Agents responded to the scene and learned that Garcia was hit by a .45 caliber muzzleloader and died before any first responders could arrive.
According to the shooter, he was shooting at a deer and didn’t know that Garcia was behind the deer due to vegetation.

I’m not an outdoorsman so sorry if this is a dumb question. But how do hunting accidents happen? I can’t imagine mistaking a deer for a human yet I see accidents happen all the time in America.

You sure about that? I heard it was a hunter fell out of a tree.

I wonder if that is actually true or if the shooter just said he was shooting at a deer instead of shooting into movement in the vegetation
