shite been like this for 20 yrs baw. I’m over it, but if they come back I’m shooting my fill.
6 for us but worse each year.

I have had plenty great years and hunts but I’d still trade nearly all my waterfowl hunts to have the quail of my youth back.

Speaking of which.. I can’t recall seeing the population surveys this year and goggle hasn’t shown them to me.

Am I just living under a rock? Based on my visual experience in SK last two years the drought has been unbelievable so I suspect the numbers are bad again just curious how bad

There is a lot of evidence that populations are significantly lower than what is posted every year. A change to the seasons and bag limits needed to happen years ago.

They got some pretty good Spring rains. I imagine that a lot of ducks probably nested late but still not good for early nesters like BW Teal.

I had to make sure I hadn't typed out that reply. I don't have a kid at home anymore but I feel the exact same way. I hunted in through the 80's when we had the points system and pintails that would cover the sky. The later 80's and 90's, I had more than my even unfair share of specks.

Now, it's not the sport it used to be.....to me anyway. I used to know a farmer who would let me go out on one of his fields even after I had to stop leasing due to the cost increase. He's gone now and those who took over don't think the same way at all. They lease to the clubs and don't care anymore about the little guys.

Limit and season changes might help but they aren’t going to fix the problem of poor nesting habitat.

I hope that everyone who’s concerned about it is a member of delta waterfowl and/or DU. (Cue the excuses for not spending money for conservation).

Whether the limit is 3 or 6, the majority of hunters aren't going to kill 6 anyway.
Came here to post this. Our blind has not limited out many times at all. The best chance is when one of us hunts alone. 3 people? Not sure it's ever happened in 3 years.

Damn AT, didn't realize we hunting the same blind. LOL
Most days M-F there are 2 in the blind and then 3 on Saturday but I don't recall a 3 man limit out of that blind in the past 4 years.

I think the final nail in coffin for LA has been driven. The coastal marshes are on the last leg. The last bastion for wintering duck habitat in the state, rice, is being converted to cane more and more every year. If LSU gets the cold tolerant gene figured out they are working on you will see even more acreage get converted.

The one thing that may change in the near future is a lot of marginal AG acreage going back to set aside or CRP/WRP programs, especially up north in the breeding/nesting areas.

Bingo.

No weather and no food = no ducks.

Pair that combo with the coastal erosion, the habitat just isn’t conducive to holding ducks in Louisiana anymore.

I’m ready for teal season. Nothing like watching them get blown out opening weekend and hunted 2x a day for the remainder.

Also, I heard Arkansas still kills more mallards than any other state. Is it really that bad?

I appreciate the suggestion but I’m really not worried about the “why” any longer. If they show I will blast some. If not, oh well, I’m not expecting them.

2023 Waterfowl Status Report

2024 report should be out next week since they normally publish around August 20. 2023 report summary for those who don't care to read it, if you believe the counts:

Total Ducks: 32 million, 9% below long term average of 35.5 m
Mallards: 6.1 m, 23% below long term average of 8 m

Last year was an anomaly bc of the massive drought. We had a good opening split, then it was basically nothing until the massive cold front post MLK weekend. We did pretty good until the second or last day or so. We did better than most of the normal guys. The baws near us who had built canals in the timber and had water smashed them- Coca Cola woods, white oaks etc.

Ark is still better than just about anywhere else, especially NE ark, but not anything like it used to be.

The season used to be 30 days with a three duck limit when duck numbers were down. Then the duck population exploded in the 1990s and so a liberal season of 60 days and a 6 duck limit has been used since then. It will be interesting to see if USFWS decreases the season length and duck limit now that we have been in a downward trend of the duck population.

I bet the shovelers found a way to produce like crazy.

I used to be mad at the ducks and wanted 6 at all costs but now I’m satisfied with killing 3 ducks on a hunt.
Harvest numbers would suggest you are killing more than most. Hunter numbers down, harvest numbers in the toilet, every flyway is experiencing dwindling numbers (some more than others) I dont ever see it moving back in the right direction. Bad flyway reports are not even something that I care about nowadays, I am tired of record numbers being reported in breeding numbers and duck counts only to see and hear everyone having tougher and tougher years.

Funny you say that, I saw quite a few on a pond outside of Amarillo Sunday afternoon.
