re: It's Vibrio Season Again

I fish with some pretty hard core waders. One of them a few years back got a bluster wading down in Baffin. It was an open wound type of blister. The next day he waded thinking nothing of it and came back feeling odd. The blister started looking jacked up and the first thing mentioned was Vibrio so he went to the hospital in Corpus. They must see that a lot down there because they knew exactly what protocol to use and it was still touch and go for a while whether he was going to lose his foot. That shite don’t play and it develops fast. Come to find out he was diabetic and that seems to be the underlying theme with getting a severe case. If you have compromised immunity I would think highly of not letting water get near any type of open wound but how practical can that be? I have heard people getting it from getting jabbed by a shrimp and cut by a hook. I will say that the doctor in Corpus said use the liquid bandage stuff and completely cover any open wound and use Hibiclens over anything else for wound treatment.

I agree, you know the amount of people on the beach, fishing, and eating seafood. Seems like it would be everywhere.

Get these now and keep it on:
Bandaid Hydroseal
It will be mostly healed by the time you get there but keep it on it to be safe.
Not a dr but use these religiously.

My dig wasn't at nurses in general. Hat knows my wife is a nurse

No worries. I appreciate a good nurse joke! Let's just say there are some interesting nurses out there....hahaha

I've used one of those bad boys on my chin.
Took a bad swim, three teeth and 12 or 13 stitches to bottom of my chin. It took about 12 hours to get to a doc and one did the trick. Was the size that would fit on the back of your heel.

I would thoroughly coat the wound in that triple antibiotic Neosporin before you put the bandage on. It might help waterproof the wound kind of like Vasoline might do, but with antibiotics. Couldn't hurt.

Thanks. Knew something like this probably existed. I bet its even more water resistant if you shave around the wound.

We probably hear about it more now and there is more awareness, but the percentage of people doing these activities who get infected is very small.
I'll still take every reasonable precaution possible. I'm not going to stop fishing.

Just say NO to wet wading
Cuts and punctures are just an occupational hazard when working on the water. Catching bait with a cast net in the dark can be brutal on the hands.

I honestly gave up wading all together when I saw a dude get hammered by a ray. That aftermath wasn’t pretty, so between the rays and sharks, I don’t like jumping out of a perfectly good boat.
Vibrio is what it is. You have a compromised immune system you are rolling the dice even if you don’t have an open wound because like you said, shite happens on a boat.

May be heading to Matty in October to wade, Baffin has been giving up some big trout per report. I need a pic with a +30” trout.

Been the best year for big trout in Baffin in a long long time. I usually hold off on Matty until Thanksgiving, you could set your calendar to the first week of December every year by seeing Sweeny holding up a ten pounder in Matagorda

You need to use tegaderm (those clear waterproof bandages).
Tegaderm Bandages
Should be able to find them at any CVS/Walgreens.

We are on the beach more than most. Tons of other families and friends. Constantly in the water and I still have not had anyone that I know of catch this. Seems more with dirty rocks and hooks.

More cases reported per kplc

I think Vibrio is mainly attacking the people with compromised immunity. For most of the people getting in the water there is nothing to worry about. I think things escalate a little with open cuts because that gives it a pathway, but even then, it isn’t a guarantee you will get it just because you cut yourself in the boat or on the beach. But, if I do cut myself I’m doing my due diligence and not blowing it off or I am taking precautions if I already have some type of wound.
Honestly, I have heard people getting this from eating undercooked or raw fish/shellfish/oysters so it all comes down to how healthy you are beforehand.

I keep Betadine.
Clean it and the area around it very well. Use liberal amounts.
Then let it dry out.
When I get home I wash and rise with peroxide and again let it air dry.
Seems to work.

These are the same material as the Bandaid brand that I posted about.
I wanted to say, that I took one of the bandaid brand and cut it up and put them on several chigger bites on my legs.
I'm happy to say that even though they were still itchy for a day or 1.5 days, the itching stopped. Other bites I did not cover and they are still itching. Wanted to see if they would work or not.
Happy to say that it seems that they do work on chigger bites.
