All my boats were bought in cash. Still needed a title to get insurance.

Bought a jon boat a few years ago and the trailer was from another boat, that the owner had died years ago. The guy who owned boat couldn't find the trailer id numbers. Looked and looked, no bueno. Trooper came out to punch some new numbers on it and realized the jack was covering up the old numbers.

quote:I think it is dumb. I understand the why, but in a lot of cases boats sit for decades before someone decides to sell them. Seems in cases like this the LDWF could just put a hold on it for 90 days to see if report of theft comes along. Or if it is reported stolen, go collect the boat.
The Louisiana boat registration procedure is not dumb, the person you bought the boat from is. It's to prevent stolen boats from being registered .

Nope, if a boat has ever been financed it will have a title. If not ever financed then no title.

In the past is had it registered in MS and then take that registration and bring it back to LA. We had to use someone with a MS ID though. Not sure if it still works, but MS is much more lenient.
But before you do something like that, did you actually go to WLF in person and talk to them? I find that when I have issues and go to Quail Drive they actually have people in there that are competent and can give you answers on how to get things done.

I have a little canoe with a transom on the back that my dad used in ponds. He bought it 20 years ago, but never had any need to register. He is now deceased and I would like to register it to run around Manchac/Fountain/Ward Creek, but the WLF form seems to indicate it was supposed to be registered within 30 days of the original purchase. Just seems like an overly restrictive process for me to not be running around illegal.

Does anyone know if there is a boat registration loophole similar to registering exotic car under LLC in Montana? A loophole where you pay a small set of fees/taxes to register in another state and not worry about boat, trailer, engine BS in Louisiana? I always see a lot of boats in Louisiana with Mississippi letters. Ive wondered if something to that.

Same stuff here in Texas. I've been through it. They won. I got rid of it which is a long story. It was a used boat and who knows? Maybe it was stolen

Piggybacking, hopefully don't have to start a new thread.
I just bought a new rig. I've got LA title in hand and bill of sale.
I live in TX, but we have a place near LC. Primarily will use the boat in LA so want to keep it registered there.
Is it 2 witnesses and a notary that I need? Or can I just have 2 witnesses sign bill of sale.
Also- not wanting to mail a title and lose it.
Do you still have to go to Baton Rouge? Or can you go into local LDWF offices to get title and registered in your name?

By your description it sounds like it is worth less than $5,000 If that is the case, and you have owned it for 5 years or more, you can go to the justice of the peace and have them legally declare you the owner. You then need them to complete the judgment form WLF.Louisiana.gov

Progressive never asked for a title to insure our boat.

Unless it is currently registered it is definitely a PITA if not impossible. A boat trailer that’s not titled and current is worse
