It’s funny, but no shame… I’ve got at least 12 different calibers that are suitable for deer. Taking out the “best” one every time wouldn’t be any fun.

Being able to use a .35 whelen as a primitive weapon is a joke
That’s a 250 yd gun that hits like Zeus’s lightning bolt

Primitive weapons seasons have never been about anything other than forcing you to buy another gun. Might as well make it a highly effective one.

I still use my CVA Optima Pro smoke pole that I bought in the 90s

I use my CVA .35 Whelen year round. Added a muzzle brake last year and a nice Meopta scope. There’s nothing “primitive” about that gun.

I am still shooting patched round balls with my Thompson Center 50 caliber smoke pole with iron sights. It is very an accurate gun. I am 3 for 3 so far and for 2 out of 3 shots I had to shoot off of my left shoulder because of deers location. I have a 50 caliber pistol for a quick follow up kill shot if needed.

Truth.. Primitive label is a joke. I love mine. Its all I hunt with regardless of season

I was in the same boat as you earlier this summer. I originally wanted a 350 Legend but decide to pull the trigger on a 35 Whelen. With a muzzle brake the recoil isn’t bad at all (it will ring your ears good though)

If I remember correctly, that's not allowed during primitive. Doesn't make any sense.

Nope, I think it can be used in MS but not Louisiana. Although I can use my 1885 which functions the same way.
I don’t have any no. 1’s in qualifying calibers anyway though.

I have a suppressor on my 35 whelen. I cut the barrel down to 19inches and it still shoots 200gr Hornady Superformance 2830 fps. Its my favorite gun!

12 ga single shot works just fine

Any of y’all use a suppressor on the 35 Whelen?
I do. Had a 28” barrel on it, swapped it out for a 24” threaded and added the can. I load my own ammo for it. I’ve been loading 200gr hammer power hammers for a couple years. Not sure on exact velocity, but it should be in the 2800fps range. Not very primitive, but fun as hell and it kills them dead.

I have a cheap H&R .444. No regrets.

I have a cheap New England firearms 45/70 gubmint but if I’d do it all over again, it’d be a 35 whelen.
