I’m new to braid and found that I get wind knots in my spinner baits.
I assume that mono leader would help preventing this.
If so, what LB mono?

Holy 2018 bump.
I may not be thinking of what yall are calling a wind knot, but I use 14-17lb mono leaders on braid exclusively to keep the braid off of treble hooked and wire baits. The mono has at least some stiffness to it, and I find it’s enough to keep them from getting fouled up. There’s supposed to be a shock absorbing effect but I have never found this to matter as much as the rod. If you’re backlashing on a broomstick with a heavy bait you’re gonna sink a few.

I call it a wind knot if it wraps around my lure, or itself when I didn’t want it to.
I could be wrong in terminology and also wanted to bump a 2018 vs starting another and having some sally tell me to search-function an age old question like the revolver vs auto wars.

Yes, a mono (or flouro) leader will help especially if the braid is lighter or broken in and has lost that waxy feel that gives it some rigidity. I don’t think flouro offers any benefit over mono as a short leader but some will disagree.

What is a good weight mono for all bass fishing off of a 15 lb braid?

Mono leader when using braided line...is it needed?
The better question is "does bass see line?". I do use a fluro leader when fluke fishing.

as has been said double uni. 20-30# mono depending on which set up i am using. be sure that if you have really small eyes on your rod, your knots are tightened up. otherwise they may shorten your casts.
i also use mono above my popping cork when chasing specks/reds. braid tends to knot up when casting with a cork and especially in windy conditions. that mono above the cork solves that issue.

15 lb braid gives me a headache to think about, but I use whatever small spool of mono I haven’t lost that will fit in my pocket between 14-17lb. Haven’t really found any practical reason to go up or down from there.

I use a leader on my 2 eggbeaters but on baitcasters never. I use and FG knot with time but an Alberto on the fly

You really only need a leader if the water is clear. And in clear water, you absolutely need one. Id do Fluorocarbon but that is. me
The best line to line knot is the FG knot and its not even close
Ive done them all and there is really nothing else close for strength and usability. This guy uses big line to show you how to tie is the best way and you can see how it works.

I caught a 42” black drum on my trout rod today which has a uni knot between 20 pound braid and 15 pound fluoro leader.
My cousin used to joke:
“Uni knot good for trout and blue marlin”

Personally I have gone back to mono. I like the feel and hook setting of braid but its a pain in the arse for me....and tying leaders on is hard to do with 58 year old eyes. Used mono for about 35 years, other than changing it more regularly it served its purpose.

I fish nothing but inshore, rather clear saltwater and use Seagaur smackdown braid. It is the limpest braid out of the box I have come across. I hate the knot passing thru a rod eye so I go with a 12-18" 25 lb flouro leader as it is almost impossible to walk the dog with a topwater tied directly to braid. It will hook wrap every other cast. If using a topwater, I tie it to a Norton twist clip as it gives it great action and its easy to change lures. On my plastics rod, I use the same flouro tied with a loop knot to lure.

Why risk not using a mono or fluoride leader? Once you get a knot down it’s really easy. I fish clear water most of the time but even if I wasn’t, I’d use a leader. Heck I use a leader most of the time with a mono rod just to use a different diameter, add a swivel, etc.
I’ve been fishing with some googan friends that tied a gotcha straight to braid and we also had a wire leader rod, hooked chicken mahi non stop on everything we had in the boat with a mono or fluoro leader. That’s just a recent known time with multiple fish, but I mean if you have weeds on your line you won’t hook fish and that’s similar to braid.

Yea, once I switched from freshwater to saltwater, and my leader got so much bigger, I started using a shorter leader so it would not be in the guides when I cast. I also use the FG knot which minimizes the size of the not and helps.
