I think a live shiner or gold fish under a float would murder too.
I am a live bait fisherman because I like to catch fish way more than I like casting practice. Nothing will beat a flat lined herring or shad around the rip rap of a bridge and the pilings, at least on large COE lakes. Folks will act like you took a dump in the punch bowl at the prom when they see you hooking up a herring but when you are loading the boat the smart oens will ask you where you got them

Caught my PB at night stroking a black/red 3/4 oz jig. It was by far the best night trip I've ever had. Went back to the same hump with AlxTiger a week later and he schooled me on the spinnerbait bite. We won the fruit jar that night with 21 lbs.
May be in the minority on this one, but no light at all unless needed for navigation. Maybe a very dim one just for retying. The best baits have already been mentioned. I got to where I just brought 3 rods: big worm, black or white spinnerbait, and buzz bait. I really miss it.

I miss False River back in the night. Many Friday nights with Miller Ponies

#20 Stren clear blue fluorescent with LED black lights and you’ll feel like you’re in Star Wars shooting lasers. 1/2 oz spinner bait with a #6 or larger Colorado blade. Black Zoom ole monster with a brass or tungsten weight with a glass bead between the hook and the weight. Big lizard works too. Anything that creates a lot of movement or vibration is good.

Throw literally anything off my dock the next 3 months.

Friday nights are still productive sitting on top of Chuck’s brush pile and super 1 in New Roads has Miller ponies too.

I've always had success with a Heddon baby torpedo or a buzzbait with a half moon or fuller without clouds

My go to at night was always a 6” junebug zoom lizard with a glass rattle inserted into body fished on a 1/2 oz Carolina rig with a short 10-14” leader.
An extra glass bead or two never hurt either.
This combo on points and humps was deadly.
Around docks same lizard texas-rigged.
And to this day I have YET to catch a bass on a spinnerbait at night. Single colorado slow-rolled across the bottom on points/humps, docks….you name it.
It is the one technique I have tried almost every time I go night fishing and have yet to even have a strike on.
It boggles my mind. Have even fished them on my G Loomis jig rod to see if maybe the hits were too light for my normal spinnerbait rod and still nothing.
:(

quote:Oh no. The bite is like a freight train. I honestly do best with the bait up in the column and thrown at banks. I have only had success slow rolling a few times.

We have better luck running them right under the surface at night, maybe 4" to 6" or so, the fish use the sky to silhouette baitfish at night so they feed up.
(or I've been told )
And they usually hit like a freight train.
I caught a 12 lb Opelousas catfish on one not long ago, just knew I had the lake record when he hit. We've also caught big stripers on them at night.

Remember you won't have any depth perception so you're not making any casts in tight areas.

I have won two tournaments at one of our local lakes by fishing a spot where pit-run ran down a hill from a construction site and formed a semi circular area of that crap that went from the bank out to about 4'. We just went back and forth the whole night part of the tourney and would catch one every once in while.
