Also get yourself the standard mapping LA1 card with the safe routes option

Only been there a time or two and I must say I wholeheartedly agree.

I’m out of Destrehan but plan to fish the Venice/grand isle area. And I don’t have much experience fishing from a boat honestly. A lot of trial and error is to come. Appreciate your reply.
If you’re not a master at launching or trailering a boat don’t launch from anywhere on grand isle. Folks don’t have patience for beginners. Go to the public marina in fourchon. Hang a right from the launch and another right into the big channel. From there pick a spot.

This right here. Also when picking up your boat get out of the way of the launch once your boat is on the trailer.

My favorite thing to do is drink a few cold ones and watch the shite show at a busy boat launch. Where best friends become enemies with the quickness

If you want to avoid crowded marinas and still fish Grand Isle, I have two suggestions. You can launch at the public marina by the police station in Port Sulphur and make a very short run to Grand Isle.
You could also launch at Myrtle Grove Marina ( many people launch themselves there), go down Wilkinson Canal, hook a left and head towards Grand Isle. It is a bit of a ride, but you should have no issues in a large, new boat.

Many long term relationships shattered quickly at the boat ramp when the wind picks up.

Leeville launch is rarely crowded. I always start east unless there's a strong east wind. All the way out in the bay and usually will fish the islands to the north when you come outta the east/west canal.

I’ve been looking to make this run for a while but been hesitant due to what seems like a long run in open water with a potential for lots of hazards along the way.
Is there a safe route that you would recommend to make the run? I have the LA1 card but don’t have the recommended routes on it unfortunately. I’ll be in a 18’ bay boat fyi. Very confident in my ability as a boater but having never made that run before I’d hate to end up grounded or hitting something underwater along the way. Any advice appreciated.

Bridgeside Marina any given weekend starting Easter. Total shite show and very entertaining.
You know things are getting bad when Buggy has to direct traffic at the launch!

You can create a route on Google Earth desktop and transfer it to your GPS most likely.

Just be patient with yourself. I grew up on boats, kayak fished a ton, thought I knew what I was doing. Nothing prepares you for how many individual things you have to remember when just launching a boat much less fishing on it.
You'll get better at it, you'll make your own systems as you go, but at the start it's not going to be a cakewalk and that's ok.
My experience exactly. Figure out a routine and do it the same way every time.

First make sure you have good gps map system and stay in the damn boating lanes and deeper water until you learn that water.
Also buy an old spots map at academy or local sporting good store and learn the reefs, creek beds etc. Next talk to everyone you can, the guy at academy, guy at boat dock, guy at bait shop etc, John CCA or a local club, etc.
Next look, and listen the water is talking to you, it’s telling you where to go, the wind is whispering to you, the sun is shining on the right spot, the moon phase is shining the way, the tide movement is telling you, the front is changing everything did you see it? The water clarity is telling you where to go. The salinity is showing you the way, the right gulls are showing you the right way, but don’t ignore the mighty jumping mullet, the pelicans are picking, and like always the baitfish are the best. Sound complicated it is that’s why it’s fishing and not catching.
For right now just watch the other boats, look for birds that are on schools of baitfish or signs of live, fish an area for 39-45 minutes max of you don’t catch fish move. You find fish generally with live shrimp when available then switch to grubs under a popping cork or on bottom.
Louisiana is easy just stay at it

I’ve done it many times in similar boat. Never had any issues, just keep a sharp lookout. Never seen water in barataria less than 4’ or so.
ETA - head southwest out of Wilkinson canal. You can pick up barataria waterway - runs north-south on west side of barataria bay. But I’ve never had an issue entering bay and aiming for queen bess island and going straight across the bay
