Seems like nearly ever ask for a dog is from a 6.5

S&W 1500 is the same as a Howa and Weatherby Vanguard. Great rifle value. 7mag will kill anything in NA

Poor bullet selection and folks greatly overestimating how good of a shot they are are the two biggest reasons. Has little to nothing to do with the caliber

Yeah not arguing that it's not common. But I would still bet it makes up less than 10% of all cartridges used for hunting.
Anyway, just went and read through their page and out of the last 50 or so tracks, the only ones listed are 300wm and .243. So perhaps in dreaming.
But as stated on this board plenty of times, I think people are using poorly designed bullets because of marketing.

Last 16 deer I’ve killed were with A-Bolt 7mm mag shooting Remington 150 grain Corelokts. Most of them were100 to 250 yds. About 1/2 dropped in their tracks,of those that ran only one went more than 50 yards.1 I shot through both lungs ran about 100 yards and had a sparse blood trail for some reason.I found him but it took me a little while.

Don't need that much recoil to kill a deer

I can’t tell you the last time I actually saw a deer 300 yards away.

I think you did good getting a S&W 1500, my brother owned one and they are good guns. 7MM Mag is a large belted magnum, long action bolt but IMO it is almost an ideal caliber for a rifle used for pretty much all large game in North America. The bullets have a great coefficient drag rating, similar to the .263 bullets used in 6.5’s. However, The .284 diameter 7MM bullets offer a much larger bullet weight selection and can be loaded from 100 grain varmint loads to 197 grain elk/moose loads, there are a lot of premium bullet choices for the caliber and Nosler Partition, Sierra Game King, Speer Grand Slam, Hornady Interlock Spire point have all done well in loads I’ve loaded for 4 of my friends that have 7 Mags.

I see some between 300-500yds every year. All does. I have a stand on a power line I could get 300 to 400 yd shots on. I have another stand I walk about 150 yds on the edge of a pipeline to get to my stand. I can see at least 600 yds down there. I've only seen one buck cross and by the time I got my gun shoulderd he was gone. I just wanted to glass him.
I wouldn't take a shot that far because I haven't practiced.
300yds on my power line, I'm shooting if it's a monster but haven't yet. Alot of deer that cross are about 250. Most deer we kill are within 200. I seldom kill a deer under 100yds anywhere on our lease but I have a few times.

Appreciate all the input guys
. I went and sighted it in and the recoil was definitely a little more than I’d prefer, but it’s not really an issue because the trigger is so nice it really helps prevent flinching. Definitely satisfied with it and can’t wait to experiment with some hogs

We've got a couple of pipeline stands we can see about 600 both ways. See a few way out there, but most are within 200 or so
The circumstances would have to be REALLY good for me to shoot past 300. And the deer better be large.

If you want to do casual shooting like hogs or 10-15 rounds at a target, I’d recommend trying a PAST adjustable recoil pad, they work great when I sight in multiple guns for friends or when I’m working up bullet loads, also helps when i shoot clay targets requiring multiple shots, makes it a lot easier on the shoulder and the nerves.

I was about to post the same thing. I had a S&W Model 1500 chambered in 30-06 in the mid 90's. It's one of the few guns I've traded. It was VERY accurate, but I really had no need for a 30-06. I originally bought it for the scope, but kept the rifle when a friend booked a black bear hunt and invited me. Unfortunately the hunt fell through. This was also the same time I was converting from rifle to handgun hunting.

The 7mm Mag is one of the best all around cartridges. That said, it’s a little overbore and needs at least a 24 inch barrel to shine. That makes for long and heavy rifles. It really isn’t needed for deer. But it will certainly work well.

Check that the kick pad hasn't gotten old and hard. Might be time to replace it.
Make sure your bench is tall enough so that you can sit upright behind the rifle. That will make the biggest difference.
You'll be happy with it. That rifle is a rebranded howa 1500 which is a fantastic rifle and greatly underpriced.
