You can not go wrong with Meopta. Whoever got you on that path knows quality and value. That being said, I think you can drop down to their Optika5 2-10 or 3-15 magnification models and your rifle will be set for hunting season. You can choose the ZPLUS reticle and then dial in the drops using Strelok Pro and your ballistic data. I have the 3-15x44 and 2 friends have it as well, love it. 1-inch tube, lightweight, and great European quality. Just google Optiak5 3-15x44 and you will be on your way.

Holy shite. Looks like i got some more researching and shopping to do. Seems like a lot of good options, just have to decide on one.

You really can’t go wrong as long as you stick to a reputable brand and get above the throwaway price point.

If you find one you like look very closely at the features and take your time to figure out what they are. Stuff like an illuminated reticle or side parallax can raise the price of the same glass a good bit, when you probably would never miss it on a hunting gun.

What about this one? leupold vx-3

I have been using Leupold for right at 30 yrs now, saved an bought my first vx2 when I was 12 or 13 and still have it today.
If you think he will be shooting any hogs with it get the lighted reticle. My next will have it, it’s extremely hard to see black cross hairs on a black hog at 2mins before legal shooting is over.

Ammo is covered. Grabbed 3 boxes at academy over the last couple months. Once my dies show up, I won't need factory ammo anyway.

Yeah about 400 or so. Should last a little while. I don't reload anything else that uses large rifle.

Maven RS.2 2-10x38

I have two sets of Maven binoculars, both of them are awesome. I am thinking of putting this scope on a gun I just customized.

I am also not a fan of 50mm scopes. With the quality of glass today, I don't think it's necessary. Looks like hell and carries in the field the same way.

Congratulations on being involved w/ your son and teaching him how to hunt. The world of hunting needs more parents like you. When my son started deer hunting he used my old Winchester M70 in 270 Win w/ a compact 2-7X scope. He enjoyed it so the next year I bought him his own deer hunting rifle, a package deal that came w/ Savage bolt action in 308 Win and an un-named 3-9X scope (prob was a Simmons). Since he was only 10 yo, I didn't see a reason to spend $$$ on a really nice scope until he demonstrated he'd take care of the gun and scope. He did well so a few years later I bought him a 3-9X Leopold Rifleman scope. I'm going against the wisdom of the OB here, but for general deer hunting a 2-7X or 3-9X scope w/ a 40 mm objective is fine. And for more blasphemy, one doesn't have to spend big $$, either. A nice Vortex, Leopold or Burris will be fine. At this time, I'd stay away from Tasco, Simmons, Barska and other lower end scopes. Unless you and your son are regularly hunting out west or on a pipeline w/ 400 yard shots, he really doesn't need maximum magnification >9-10X. As far as mounts/rings, buy a Weaver one piece base and a pair or Burris Signature Z rings (the ones w/ the plastic inserts). I've been exclusively using that type of scope mounting system now for about 15 years. Get the right height so that the objective bell of the scope is mounted as close to the barrel as possible w/o touching it. Keep us updated.

With that budget, Swaro Z3 2.5-10x42 with the #4 reticle. Keep it classy!

Have the same scope on my rifle, great scope for the $$. For a great deal give Doug at cameralandny a call.

Or go 4x12x40, putting a telescope on a trim rifle is a waste

Check out Trijicon scopes, that’s what I put on my sons Tikka 3 lite in 7mm08. The lighted reticle makes target acquisition very easy, in 3x9x40.
