That's awesome that he's into it so young. My dad fed it to me and I've been fishin all my life and love the outdoors, so naturally when I had kids, I wanted them to enjoy it like I do.
I have 2 sons, age 8 and 5 and a daughter age 6. So far I'm pretty sure my oldest son could care less about it; I've tried small doses since he was about 3, b/c like you said, you don't always catch and that's not exciting for a kid. I don't want to ruin him on it. We've caught some nice bream, but it just doesn't excite him, he grows tired of it very quickly, too hot, etc. It's frustrating, but they are all different. If it's not his thing, I cannot force him to like it.
My 5 year old seems very interested and my daughter is somewhere in between. For me, it's more about just spending time with them doing father/son, father/daughter things.
I love hearing stories like yours, there's nothing better than seeing young kids fishin.

Nothing better than days spent outdoors with the kids.

Great story, got into some reds like that last year on big lake, what a ride. Wish my father had lived longer to have experienced trips like that. Here are a few grankid stories I have experienced.
Took oldest grandson duck hunting a lot. Even before he was old enough to hunt, shoot. His father was in the army and was sent to war three times, so I was the stand in father so to speak. Once he got old enough to hunt, he killed his first duck with me, pintail sprig, which he got mounted. The hunt that I most remember we only killed three. It went like this. Slow day in the blind only had one woodie. Usually on slow days I'll get in the boat and straighten out decoys. Just about to pull out of the blind and grandson hollers ducks. I hear some woodies squealing and tell him to take em, wherever they are, I'm pulling out of the blind, can't see. He shoots twice and screams pappy I doubled on the first shot. I hurriedly get the boat out and see two ducks laying on the water. I'm thinking glad I was here for this and the only way for this to be better was for one too be banded. I pick drake up first, nada. Pick up hen and lo and behold, jewelry. Didn't say anything except how happy I was he had his first double and why he missed on his second shot, ha ha. Get in the blind and throw him both ducks. He always inspects the birds we kill. I throw the drake first then the hen. He sees the band and we high to five to infinity and beyond.
Next was fishing with granddaughter in a good old boy bass trny. She's the only female and kid in the field. We catch several bass, lots in the slot we can't keep which she didn't understand why we have to throw em back. End up catching two overs(kickers) and three unders for our five fish to weigh. After all weighed in, we end up third out of over forty boats. Plus she makes a one dollar bet with one of her coaches on heaviest stringer, which we also had. The smile she had that afternoon was ever etched into my memory

My daughter has been texting me daily counting down the days until she gets home from summer semester and we go fishing. T-9 and counting!
This Dad can't wait.

I am almost 62 and my Dad is gone now, but I will never forget the hundreds of times he took me fishing. That was always a great time in my life when we spent time together fishing, crabbing, crawfishing, berry picking. He was a great dad.

Took my seven year old fishing Friday evening. First few spots not much. Then last spot was loaded with redfish. Between 7:15 and dark as fast as we could cast they were consistently biting. We have a few country songs that are "our" songs. Watching You, My Old Man and Best day of my Life (all dad and son songs) and such that I have on a playlist. All three songs we both were fighting fish at the same time. He told me afterwards that he said a prayer that we would catch on those songs. Was the best 2-3 hours of my life. Made me really enjoy life and will reach for that memory quite often.
Thats what the outdoors is all about. Can't wait to take my little redneck princess fishing.
ETA - For the OP. Not to bring you down, but my dad passed away when i was 9 years old. Being that my memory sucks, and always has, i have very few solid memories of him. But 2 stand out...Deer hunting in plain dealing on a pipeline, and going to toledo bend about 2 months before he died. I caught 9 bass and 2 HUGE crappie on a rapala original floating minnow. Point is, these days last a lifetime.
