I have been invited in a tuna trip next month. I have never fished offshore, only inshore. What can I expect? A little nervous about chumming the water the entire time. What is a sure fire way to avoid puking?

Don’t go.
Jk
Avoid alcohol. Drink plenty of water. Maybe have some Dramamine on hand? Never truly gotten sea sick so I don’t have a ton of remedies. However I do know you want to have plenty of fresh air.

Take dramamine the night before, and the morning of. I think drinking helps to be honest, just drink water as well.

I have and have tried everything. Nothing really works for me but I still go....only when it's calm.

Some friends swear by dramamine pill.

Others like the patch (scopalamine).

I'd try the pill before the patch because the patch can mess you up!

no alcohol, fresh air, a clear view all help. Try to get some food in your stomach that morning (light breakfast bar or fruit or something)

Dramamine night before and morning of before getting on boat. It will work, guaranteed. Drink plenty of water, eat light. Stay on deck, do not go into the cabin if the boat has a cabin. Most likely your adrenaline coupled with keeping vision and sense of motion more or less in tune (that won't happen inside a cabin, you will feel the movement but not see it) you will be fine anyway BUT why take a chance. I know people who make a living on charter boats who take dramamine almost every trip. I have been offshore a bunch and I use it about half the time, when someone offers it or I think about it, and I have never been sea sick...got close once on a cruise ship in the dining room because I could feel the movement but could not see it.

Bring some small cans of ginger ale along, that will help settle your stomach
Since you have some time get a scopalamine patch, Rx needed

Ginger is a natural remedy as well. Not ginger in ale or beer. Get pure ginger it helps. You could have a doctor prescribe scopolamine patches but I would t unless you know you get sick. Dramamine is helpful, keeping a full stomach is helpful and hydration is good. Getting excited and over doing booze does not help.

If you are first time, take Dramamine 1-2 hours before hand. Do not take it after getting sick.

If you are highly susceptible to motion sickness, get an electronic relief band. They have them on Amazon along with quite a few cheaper knock off brands.

They also have the non electronic bands that apply pressure to a point on your wrist. They work well when coupled with OTC medication.

If you have a doctor friend, have them call in a prescription for the ear patch.

Also get a script of Zofran for if you get nauseous

Ive been offshore fishing for years and tried dramamine (which makes you feel like shite), scopalamine patches which work but dry you out and dont dare touch your eyes, zofran, and anything I could get my hands on with no luck. I work in the medical field and remember begging my wife to shoot me up with Phenergan just to knock my arse out from puking so much when we were 160mi out of Orange Beach. I was always fine when running, but if that boat stops and theres waves, Im chumming like a mutha Call me a pussy, zero fricks given, but Ive never been able to tolerate going out, but loved to go. There is one thing that had helped me tremendously and it was wearing a relief band. I can sit out there all day and have never felt sick once. I HIGHLY recommend this if none of the above works. Good luck!

Relief Band

Get a Scopolamine script. Works better than Dramamine.

if you do get sick…

you have to change your equilibrium or it will never pass. Sit in a deck chair and have someone dump a bucket of cold (ice cold is best) water on your head

Devils lettuce will do it for sure. Probably make the trip more enjoyable too.

Wife takes trip tone and it seems to work. But I’ve found people using the patch have better success. Listen to what others have said, don’t drink heavily the night before, drink plenty of floods and if you’re going to go the pill route, start taking them the night before.

Bonine>>>>Dramamine. A lot less side effects. Take one the night before and at least an hour before boarding. Dramamine does make some Ginger Chews for Nausea that I keep onboard for when someone says they feel queasy. I also suggest bringing a couple of Ginger Ales on the boat, same theory.

A lot of folks swear by Scopolomine patches, but I’ve never used them personally.

I got sea sick when I was a kid the first time out on the open water and my dad dropped me off at an old rig to sit for a few minutes and it worked

To answer the question I use Dramamine before going out and try to avoid hard liquor the night before. That works for me

1. Be man

That's all I got.

(In reality, try to eat light. Bring Dramimine.)
