Sharks now congregate in large numbers at Boca Grande Pass in FL waiting for anglers to hook up during the Tarpon run.

Have been there many times and can confirm. There are some big hammerheads around there

Was just there last week

They have been increasingly bad for the past 4-5 years, and I agree with the poster that said the raping of our pogies is a contributor. They didn’t need to eat our trout and snapper when there were acres upon acres of fat, oily, dumb fish milling about. Now that we’ve allowed the foreign fleet to concentrate here after being run off from every other coastal state, I don’t see the huge schools of pogies and the sharks and dolphins have turned into bears raiding garbage cans.

That said, I’ve been researching bangsticks like divers use. I’m fed up with losing expensive tackle, and even more expensive snapper to those SOB’s, and they are EVERYWHERE. And once they find you on a wreck or reef, you’d might as well move. We often hook the same one more than once. And with circle hooks, way too often, they don’t come unbuttoned, and you have to haul them to the boat 15-20 minutes later in the sweltering heat just to cut your leader. I think a .357 hollow point might dissuade repeat customers.

I gave young greenjeans an earful at Bridge Side this weekend when he came by doing creel surveys. About sharks, and about their BS tally that said 17% of our annual quota was caught in the first week of the season when it was so rough. He said they’d had a lot of complaints on both, but as to sharks, he claims tPotatoUS passed legislation in 2022 severely restricting commercial harvest and transportation of sharks, so they are somewhat limited. I’ll have to dig deeper to find that.

He said that he would cut them up into steaks.. I would try it, but I would eat almost anything.

My favorite place to go!

Great fishing, golf and food while not being overcrowded like some beach towns

I live just north of there and they chase the tarpon all over here. Hate them.

3-5 foot spinners and black tips arent a problem
its those freekin 7-8 foot bulls and lemons that get your attention
unfortunately, if youre diving in murky shite, you don’t always see them…

I think there are so many due to lose of barrier island/ marsh Etc. this lets a higher salinity water closer in.

I still say kill them all. I hooked 5 in a row trout fishing last week. also had 3-4 trout come back with only a head due to shark attacks.

I'm not a "kill em all" type but i used to be a huge wade fisherman and have essentially given it up due to sharks. Chandy, Breton, Coon Point, Mae's have all gotten really bad the last 5-10 years. The blacktips dont really bother me but when those bulls start busting up mullet I get the frick out of there.

We had to skim 20 of our 30 trout on the top to avoid them on Sat

The only keeper double I caught had a bull breach at the boat on the bottom trout and made me squeal like a little girl. Tail slapped the side of the boat

That’s my 2nd encounter with a bull in 3 trips. Very used to btips and spinners, but I haven’t seen any in the usual spots. I’ve seen 2 bulls in 45 years there

Now 2 in a month

I've eaten shark a couple times and it was ok, certainly better than Bass. Cleaned it like a Trout, no fishy smell, clean looking filet. It was a small one, maybe 3'. I've also eaten Nutria several times, better than Rabbit, with bigger hind quarters. Kinda messy to clean.
We need a topic to find out the different creatures people have eaten. I mean, if you've eaten snails, oysters, clams, and sucked the head of a crawfish, you'll eat pretty much anything. I've also eaten Rattlesnake and it was really good, nice long tenderloin.
