Found a couple places i want to go look at in the Poplarville area
My mother and her husband retired from NOLA about 15 years ago and built their dream home on 13 acres between Poplarville and Picayune. They loved it out there. They put in a big walking garden, and a yoga studio. A group still comes by every morning at 7:30 and does yoga there. It is a nice little community of retired NOLA people, artists, locals, etc. Very cool place.
Her husband passed away last year and she is selling to move to be closer to her grandkids. But they loved it there.

Kincaid or Toledo. But you give up everything to go to Toledo to gain toledo

Just an idea. Try and get on with the National Park Service or Forest Service. Most of these employees live in very rural areas. You can enjoy the outdoors without having to purchase a large piece of land for the time being while still making a decent income.

I'm originally from a small part of MS and I would be there right now, but as you mentioned, it's just really hard to find work unless you're in something offshore. People either do that or struggle to get by running a business.
I haven't made the change myself but if you're asking if you should do it or not I'd say go for it if you can make the money work. No where in MS is really all that far from an interstate, it's not like you're moving to the Yukon.

Yeah it started as just joking around but it is a very real possibility lately as the wife is definitely on board. The thought of having a few decent food plots and shooting deer, hogs and turkey off my own place in a nice quiet setting is getting more and more tempting. An average size fish pond is a huge plus too. Hopefully interest rates will go up so i can make some passive income that would sweeten the deal.

When I retired I was gonna do the same, back to my home property in SW LA. Oh, wait...I can't do that anymore...some big arse LNG company called Driftwood is buying out all the folks along Moss Lake and making them move. Had that land in our family since 1977...sure gonna miss going home.

I wouldn't worry much about the kids if you really want to move. They'll adjust.
I grew up on Bayou Blue in the 70s. It was essentially the sticks. Never played organized sports. Hunted, fished, mowed grass, threw the football and baseball with my dad. Shot basketball with my brother and dad. It was an awesome childhood.
Teenage years may be more daunting, though.

honestly, i mean i love hunting south MS areas but to live in these small towns full time would drive me insane. too much poverty and trash all over. i mean i know you can live anywhere and be within a hop of trailers etc but MS is just kind of trashy to truly enjoy stick living imo.

quote:I don't enjoy Kincaid enough to retire there. I think our plan is Cane River. Easy (and good) bass fishing, close enough to family hunting land and the Red river, and the wife likes Nakitrash.
I keep coming back to Kincaid
I do have a lot on Saline that she thinks we should build on, but I don't think she would be happy living that far in the woods.
This will probably happen when the kids are both gone and I'm too old to enjoy much of anything though.

You live in Nola right? I get what you're saying but that shite is everywhere.

home school the kids till jr high
Don't do this. Homeschooling works for kids when they are young. When they get 9-10 they really need the constant interaction with other children. Dumping them in high school when they are 16 may be very difficult for some children.
I'd try my absolute hardest to find a good school district in the coastal areas of MS or somewhere like St Francisville.

yeah but the MS trash in these small MS towns is just a whole new level vs some spotted areas in suburbias.

Some areas are better than others. Meth is a real problem there but my parents live 20 minutes outside Hattiesburg in the sticks and they haven't locked their doors in 30 years. Dad has thousands of dollars worth of power tools sitting in an open air garage in plain view of the road. No way would I leave shite out like that as a camp, but at a house you live in full time, and have dogs, you're generally not gonna have problems with stuff walking off.

I'm not too familiar with the inner workings of that business but I think most of it comes in from Mexico. Lab fires used to be pretty common on the local news but they've dropped off in the last few years. I was speaking about use more than cooking, and Chad is right that there's plenty of folks who will steal shite to pay for their habit even out in the country.

Very few making it anymore other than the 20oz bottle shakers. Mexicans making it in bulk and selling cheap.
ETA: Thats what I heard

Look at working for the county you are moving to, in the Civil field. You could probably leverage your military experience to some kind of road work, or facilities maintaince. Your pay will not be great, but COL will be lower, and your insurance will be cheap. Can probably get a truck, too.
ETA:
As others have mentioned, drugs are an issue. I grew up in the back woods, and won't go back. The tweakers are just as bad as the urbans.
