Apparently it takes the same chokes as Benelli which is nice as well.
Be careful with that. I emailed Retay not long ago to find what aftermarket chokes are comparable to Retay. This is part of their response
quote:
Retay shotguns use a semi-proprietary Retay Marapro choke pattern. The thread pitch and outward appearance are identical to a Benelli Crio Plus, but the thread and collar outer diameters are smaller. Please only use Retay-specific chokes in a Retay shotgun. Currently, Jebs (2021-current), Kicks (March 2024-current), Carleson's (July 2024-current), and Indian Creek (2022-current) make chokes to our specifications in 12g, and Jebs (2021-current), and Indian Creek (June 2024-current) in 20g.

Thanks for the heads up. I have been working with Kicks they e mailed to say their cryo Benelli will fit the Retay FYI. I now have one on the way.

Any decent shotgun with Apex TSS
This times a million. Do not waste your money buying a "turkey gun" unless you are buying one that you specifically plan to have sent off, ported, and pattern tested via numerous shells. (this is the way turkey guns used to be done) you would buy an 870 for example send it off, they would cut the barrel, port it, and pattern test with numerous shells to find the best fit for your gun.
Turns out--now days the same gun you shoot ducks with, paired with a good TSS load (i prefer windy hill precision) and a quality choke (i prefer Indian Creek) will pattern just as well. Yes you need to shoot different shells through it to see which one is the best--but I would not waste money buying a specific gun for "turkey hunting."
In reality most people that buy "turkey guns" go opening weekend, once in texas on a trip, and then the gun sits in the safe until the following year.
Im all for having as many guns as I can--but practically a "turkey gun" is not necessary.

I resemble that remark!
As someone who’s “wasted” money on 4 turkey guns (and a turkey barrel), I definitely agree with you, but I like collecting, so any excuse for a new gun is good enough for me.
That being said, for the occasional turkey hunter, you definitely don’t need anything special. However, as someone who puts in a bunch of miles every spring, I like to have something short and light with me.

Dont disagree with you at all that buy every gun you can.
Just being realistic on the "need" for a turkey gun** for someone who recreationally hunts them a few times per year.
Side note: most ppl need to turkey hunt with a bb gun first to learn how to call a bird in closer than 60 yards, but thats a hill I'll die on in another thread.

You got a link?
Check Bass Pro's website. I bought a Stevens single shot .410 for my son a couple of years ago for $199. It came with a turkey choke already on it. I started using it myself after I killed a couple last year but never had an opportunity to shoot another one once I started bringing it.

I actually just left my local hunting store and they have one that comes with the red dot for $250-275. If I didn’t have to pick up my son, I would have bought it right now

With the chokes and turkey shells that are available now just buy an 870 and save most of your money.

I have pumps and autos.
If covering a lot of ground for a good part of the day, I would rather carry the weight of the 870 than the extra weight of the semi auto

Why are all the single shot turkey guns 26” barrels? You can find some turkey guns with shorter barrels, so this doesn’t make sense?
I was looking into preferably a 20” o/u in either 410, 28, or 20 gauge to use for small game and turkey hunting with tss. A double barrel with one extra full and one modified choke would be the tits.
But I was thinking a single barrel with a short barrel 18.5-20” would be sweet too. It’s one shot and a .410-20gauge isn’t going to be nearly the kick as a 3.5” 12 gauge so I’d love to have the weight savings

My understanding was that when they started testing .410 “Turkey” guns out, they got the best patterns out of a 26” barrel. It’s still a short overall length because the action is short.
However, CVA just came out with the “scout spur” which is a 410 with a 20” barrel. But it weighs 6.7lbs.
ETA: For reference, my Rossi tuffy turkey with a 26” barrel is only 1-3/4” longer than my 940 pro turkey with an 18.5” barrel.

My 940 pro turkey weighs the same as an 870 SPS turkey. My Maxus weighs even less with an extra 9.5” of barrel.

Yeah I don’t get how these 20s and especially 410s are not considerably lighter than 12 gauges? Doesn’t make any sense.
I use my old browning bps as a basically dedicated turkey gun and I was just looking at options for long walks. It’s really not an issue with a sling for me but compact and light would definitely offer some advantages. I think my bps is close to 8 lbs, I can’t believe you can’t find a 5.5 lb 410. I was thinking it would be a sweet little squirrel gun also.

I bought a mossberg super bantam Turkey 20 gauge that weighs 5.25 lbs, nice compact little package and great for kids too. I honestly don’t think it gets much better than that for a dedicated turkey gun. It will be on my shoulder this spring.
The Rossi tuffy turkey weighs around 3.7 lbs, 410 with 26” barrel but it’s still a small package. My wife enjoys carrying it a whole lot more than the 20 gauge 870 she used to carry.

Personally, I would get either a Benelli M2 or a Franchi Affinity 3 turkey. I would go 20 gauge and if it's gonna be a dedicated turkey gun, I would go with a pistol grip. Never knew how much they helped until I finally tried one!!

When I went to my local hunting store the other day. I look at both of these in 20ga ( the Affinity was not the turkey version). Really like both. The M2 felt the best out of holding both of them. However, the one thing I like with the Affinity over the M2 is that the receiver is drilled and tapped for an optic. I’m not sure if I will use an optic for turkey hunting but I do like that option.

Let me know how the Kicks choke works out. I emailed them the other day with some questions and they responded within minutes. I tried reaching out to Jebs and never could get a response.
I was about to get another gun the other day but had some unexpected expenses come up and I have to put that on hold. May be able to get another one before the season starts but for now, I am going to prep my Masai and go from there

I'll certainly follow up here and let you know. I Have a lot of work travel and vacation next couple weeks so I likely won't get to shoot it until youth turkey weekend after taking my boys... I'll let you know something!
