I hand caught one that was 9-07, it swallowed a bluegill that’s was too big and it was drowning. I was able to get the bream out and revive her and let her go. The bream was huge too. Private lake near Petrey, Al.

I’ve caught a few over 5 pounds with rod and reel. One in Bayou Benoit and the rest we’re in a family impoundment that hurricane Rita destroyed.

10-2 off a jig-n-craw out of Kincaid in 2001. Night fishing and one small hump was absolutely loaded with big bass. Couldn’t even fish after the big one bit around 10:30.

AlxTiger and I went back a week later and won a tournament there. I love jigs and big craw worms, but got schooled in spinnerbaits that night.

I don’t know man, I’ve hammered so big trout in the PAC on a Banjo Minnow.

The helicopter lure is 100% a gimmick.

Half acre pond across the pasture from my childhood home:

When I 12, I caught a 5 pounder out of that pond and a few months later pulled out an eight pounder. I also had one break my line a couple of times and I never caught it.

I peaked at 12 years old.

Nah, once you switched from the jig to the craw worm, you caught them good. That's the second time I have seen poor hook up on jigs. I think sometimes they eat the jig so deep, you're just slamming the head of it against their closed mouth and the hook never touches anything.

It takes a lot of rod to set the hook on a jig, especially if the weedguard is pretty stiff. Angle of the hook eye also plays a role in hookup. I use the same rod for jig fishing that I use for frogs, and usually straight 65lb braid with no leader.

The other time I was referring to in that post was a tournament on Henderson. I yanked several bass totally out of the water that were never hooked. Switched to craw worms and stopped missing them.

It happens, not all jigs are created equal. I prefer one that has a nice sized gap between where the hook is pointing and the line tie, then I trim the weedguard a good bit. A jig that has the hook point directly in line with the eye won’t hang up but it also won’t get good hooksets.

PB came about a month ago on a neighborhood lake

Didn't get a weight or length but it was a nice fish. Caught on a 5" senko wacky rig.

Have 3 over 10 lbs all from Falcon Lake down on the Texas-Mexico border. Largest being 10-13 on a jig... Next is an 8lb on Fayette County Lake...

You’ve been down there lately? I heard the fishing has deteriorated on the lake. True?

I am not sure there will ever be a lake like Falcon was in its prime. Its still a great lake, water is very low right now, but it still has a lot of 10+ pounders in it. Just suffers from the gill netting and over fishing on the mexico side. Still best lake in this part of the country. But I will say Fayette county is the best fishery in pure numbers. Don't get many over 8 there but its stacked with 3-6 pound bass.
