Was walking a south Louisiana marsh many years ago. It was dead where I was hunting but we had enough lease so I could walk 200 to 250 yards to the potholes where ducks were working. I waded through the tall marsh grass and could hear but not see the ducks just ahead. Suddenly a couple of pintail jumped up ahead. I reeled off three shots as quickly as I could. Maybe I got one, maybe I didn't. But after those three shots hundreds of pintail scared up about 25 to 30 yards from me. The view was just pintail everywhere. And all I could do was watch them fly away. Should have been more patient.
I've also jumped up to shoot at mallards that had circled and circled before I should have. I've done that a bunch of times. I hate how mallards work sometimes.

The big crab claw 9 point came right up the trail to the spot I shot the doe - 17 yards. Stopped and looked at my bow on the ground. Looked up at me in the tree. And hauled arse.

Different perspective but great story. I was an awful duck hunter but had good friends that were good at it.

Breath, press, CLICK! By the time I got one chambered he was gone. I always load my rifle after I quit dicking around and am settled in, but I hadn’t gotten there yet. Biggest deer I have ever squeezed the trigger on.
First time I ever attempted a shot at a deer I was maybe 8 or 9. Different than your situation but a spike came out and I got nervous, dad next to me, I ejected the bullet out instead of shooting and he ran off

Too many to list…
Climbing down a ladder and the deer waltzing by. Not knowing what to do but shimmy back up the ladder to get off a shot only to watch deer lope off laughing
Another time stalking and the last turn of a lane I bust through instead of peeking around corner only to have a nice 8pt bust me.
.30-30 round didnt go off on a huge 8pt. By the time i racked another shell he gone

First one, hunting some school board property years ago. Back then I bought and sold hunting rifles like crazy and I was in between guns so I borrowed one for the hunt. Big 8pt, no question going on the wall, walks out at 40 yards. Slightly quartering away, basically broadside, chip shot. Found no blood, hair, anything. Followed the tracks through the soft ground as far as I could but no blood. Got back to the truck and put a target out and took a shot and drilled the bullseye.
Second one, had been hunting deep deep in public almost everyday and not seeing shite. Walking out one evening I saw 5 does. The next evening I set up on the ground with my bow where I saw the does so I could try to put some meat in the freezer. One of the biggest bucks I’ve ever seen in my life comes walking down the “doe” trail. I had no shot until he got past the thicket 10 yards away. He stopped behind that thicket for a minute and then bolted. Guess he smelled me. 1-2 more steps and he was dead. Should’ve sat my arse in a climber like I had some sense.

Has been trying to get my wife a good deer for years. She has killed several culls and others but never anything to really good excited about. Finally got a shot at a deer we’ve been hunting for years. He had actually been on the downhill slide the previous 2 years. First mistake I made was having her shoot a 6.5 creedmore. 2nd mistake was when the deer started flopping after 8 minutes on the ground I didn’t grab the gun and shoot him again for her. He was killed on adjoining property 3 weeks later. 151 inches.

Opening afternoon of gun season in Mississippi when I was 15. Had scouted out a spot in the far corner of the lease overlooking a creek and shooting lane. On way to ground blind, jumped 2 deer about 100 yds from blind but didnt know what they were. I make it to blind and get settled in. Short time later I hear some splashing and fighting down at the far end of the creek bend I'm hunting. Two nice 8 pts come around the corner at about 75 yds. They start sparring in the creek. Get my crosshairs on the bigger one and squeeze off a round. They look up wondering what happened and I can't believe I missed. Chamber another round and shoot again. This time they trot a little closer because they still can't figure out where the shots are coming from. Chamber another round and shoot a 3rd time at the bigger buck. This time he takes off and leaves the smaller one in the creek. I chamber my last round and the smaller buck is still standing there looking at me. Fire my last round and he finally takes off. 4 shots and not a single one found its mark. Pops chalked it up to buck fever, but I had never missed before. We shot the gun the next day and it was dead on at 100 yds. Still can't explain it to this day.

One time I was hunting with my grandfather and his old friend. I'm not the best speck caller but I managed to work a group of about 10 right towards us. As they are about to float right into shooting range, before I called the shot, the old friend jumped up and started blasting off. Dude didn't hit a single bird and no one else jumped up to shoot.
Me and my buddy just looked at each other in disbelief and sort of laughed it off.
Edited bc not really a moment I blew. But its a f up that still sticks with me.

I bounced an arrow off the back of a doe at 12 yds last week. Killed a big doe and an 8pt from same spot last yr with same bow and same spot. No clue how I missed her. Three evenings ago missed a deer on public land at 27 yds. How do i know 27 yds? Because not only did i range it I practiced that exact shot 6-8 times before the hunt. I knew where they would come out. I was dialed in at that exact distance. Next day I shoot again and hit bullseye. It was a public land small spike so i wasnt nervous but who knows why I missed. It happens but i cant wait to get my crossbow back from being fixed from barnett

So I wasn’t really into deer hunting until the ducks in LA seemed to stop showing up.
Anyways…
I’m on a friend of mine’s property on an afternoon/evening hunt and I heard noise for about an hour behind my stand. It’s definitely something big and just kind of trotting up and down this creek bed.
Anyway I’m focusing my attention and after another 45min or so I see an 8pt walking along the ridge. Being a new deer hunter and never killed one my heart is pounding out my chest. He was only about 35yds behind me and I couldn’t get a clear shot, but he’s walking towards the food plot. I don’t pull the trigger thinking he’s going to come out in the food plot and give me a shot.
An hour goes by and nothing then suddenly boom a deer with horns appears and boom.
It’s a spike….my first deer went from a possible 8pt to a spike.

I have a health condition (epilepsy) and during a time when it wasn't great I decided it wouldn't be a great idea to climb the stand we call the suicide stand. (Lack of sleep was a trigger) it had been a while since I had been hunting and I was pumped. Could not sleep. Finally passed out at 2:30am. Woke up at 4:30am. My dad already was ahead of me. Dude was somewhat insomniac during hunting season.
I ate my sausage biscuit. Was a little paranoid cause lack of sleep so I setup in a pine thicket 30 yards from the suicide stand that is basically 8 acres of nature white oaks. The stand is old and at least 30 feet up with only screw in steps.
I cover myself in pine straw and get comfortable near that stand. It was cold AF a d the pine straw actually helped insulate me. I was there a good hour or more before sunrise. I pass out and fall deep asleep. I awake around 8am surrounded by 6-7 deer. One of them wasa big buck and a other was a shooter probably 3-4 year old buck. I slowly raise my rifle. Didn't have to much cause I was on high point on a hill. A squirrel or something else spooked the bucks. I needed and wanted some meat so I shot one of the larger does. The big buck didn't continue down the trail but the younger decent 8 point did and my Dad shot it.
A week later the big boy I saw 30 feet from me was killed by some neighbors. It was an above average rack but the size was like 200+lbs or something stupid.
It was a large mature buck. Had I been able to get proper sleep and been okay climbing the "suicide" stand I would have put him on the ground. It's still a pretty popular route for deer because of the white oaks, water, clover, and honey suckle. This was 10 years ago. Access to that stand isn't possible these days. I still will hunt on the ground posted up against a 25 year old pine.
The rush of being eye level with a buck is tough to beat. It is primal. I am not a turkey hunter but I think the feeling would be similar.

I feel like I have a worse blown moment every year.
A couple weeks ago I was hunting out of state in the Midwest. First full day there I spent the morning scouting. I'd glassed a tree I thought I could climb near some ag fields to do an observation hunt. When I got to the tree it was a big arse honey locust with demonic thorns all over it. I ended up walking about 400 yards further to where a couple of tree lines met near some CRP. Heavy deer sign all over. I was able to get about 20 ft up a tree with one stick. Branches all over it but still not as much cover as I'd like with no leaves on the tree. 25 mph wind hitting me in the face, 20ish degree temp. A little before sundown I had my back to the wind watching deer in the cornfield a couple hundred yards away. I heard something and when I turned around a big arse 8/10 pt with split brown tiles was staring at me from 20 yards. He looked at me for a 10 or 15 seconds then turned and slipped off.
I didn't bungee the backpack straps on my stand like normal and they were flapping in the wind. He was coming uphill towards me and keyed in on that.
The wind shifted that night and I never got to go back to that area.

One that sticks out from around ‘96-dad was going to turn the dogs out mid-day so I hauled arse to get ahead of where I thought they’d cross. A few other guys did the same.
Was standing on the road on the back of our place and I heard the dogs hit and start getting closer. Heard a deer in the water and then palmetto and I’m standing there with my rifle slung. A big arse deer, all I recall is seeing huge bases and that he had really dark horns, jumps over the palmetto about 20’ from me, lands and makes a hard left turn away from me, crosses the canal behind me and is gone across the neighboring field. I was in awe and thinking “wtf” since the buck ran by me in a flash and I didn’t really have a chance to even draw on him. So the dogs cross and than I hear 10-15 shots across the neighboring fields. I was sick and took that git danged sling off my rifle and through it in the back of my truck swearing to never use a gd sling again.

Public land Illinois.
184" buck broadside at 17 yards.
I draw back. Check to make sure no sticks/branches are in the way.
WHOP.
I shot before I was anchored again.
Shot goes wide. Bad shot.
I wasn't able to find him but the buck ended up being found 6 days later.

Was a junior in high school. Just me and our lab went goose hunting. Got to the rice field about 2am and put out about 1200 rags myself. Cold front due to hit in the morning. Go rages out and the geese were on top of me in the dark because there was a roost about 1/2 mile away. I brought a 10 ga single shot and my Remington 1100. At first light the geese started coming and started workign my spread. Dog and I were hunkered down on levy. It seemed like I had 5000 geeses circling the spread. First 2 snows landed about 30 feet away right in front of me and the rest of the geese started pouring down to land. Dog decided to bolt for the 2 geese that were walking around in front of me. When she did she knocked both guns out of my lap and into a tire rut full of water. There was that moment of "oh shite" silence from the geese and then nothing but wings flapping and geese hollering. Pulled one gun out of the water and tried to dump it... I never got a shot off.
Front came through about 20 minutes later with wind blowing out 25. Blew my "rags" which were actually trash bags all over the field and my hunt was done.

Hunting public land last year. Shot a doe out of a group of three that died on the spot. It's 4p.m. I wait ten minutes and decide to climb down and start quartering her since I am 1/2 mile from my truck.
I reach the ground. My climber is still on the tree. I hear noise and a nice 8pt is coming down the same trail. It stops about 40yds from me. Put the neck in the scope and pull the trigger. Click! Internal magazine didn't push another round up when I racked the empty casing out....
